Children of Aakaash special school, Alagarkovil, Madurai
Aakaash Special School was established by M.S.Chellamuthu Trust and Research Foundation in 1995, the school offers free special education services to children with disabilities residing in villages around Alagarkovil Area, Madurai, Tamil Nadu, India. A significant proportion of the students at Aakaash Special School have intellectual disabilities, bipolar disorder, autism, and other related conditions. The programme's objective is to provide sustainable educational support and treatment care to underprivileged children with special needs.
Limited access to mental health services and resources in rural areas poses significant challenges for children studying at Aakash Special School:
· Lack of qualified special educators in rural areas: Many parents from rural villages struggle to enrol their children in private institutions due to the scarcity of qualified special educators.
· Financial barriers: Economic constraints force one parent to work while the other stays home to take care of the child.
· Additional challenges: Malnutrition and societal stigma further compound the difficulties faced by these families.
· Discrimination and prejudice: Parents of these children, who are predominantly daily wage labourers, face discrimination and prejudice from the community.
· The students at Aakaash Special School predominantly hail from economically disadvantaged rural families, facing challenges in accessing mental health treatment, special education, limited resources, and adequate housing.
· A significant proportion of the students at Aakaash Special School have intellectual disabilities, bipolar disorder, autism, and other related conditions.
Since 1995, Aakaash special school, provides free educational support and treatment to children (aged 5-14 years) with intellectual disabilities. The Special School provides early interventions to improve developmental trajectories and outcomes with regard to health, language, cognitive, social, and emotional development.
The school relies entirely on the support of generous donors and community well-wishers, ensuring its ability to cater to a maximum of 60 children. Currently 40 children study at Aakaash, and a few alumni come to avail the day-care services offered at School.
Children studying at Aakaash are provided the following services
· Special Education
· Speech Therapy
· Physio Therapy
· Occupation Therapy
· Treatment and Medicines
· Uniform, Books, Stationeries
· Daily Mid-day Meals and Health Drinks
· Transportation services
Various programmes like life skill sessions, yoga and exposure visits, etc. are also planned for the children. Parent are given detailed psychoeducation and family counselling that will help the child receive support from the entire family.

Our "Sponsor a Special Child" initiative is to bridge the educational gap and empower special children to become independent and active contributors to society. By providing them with quality education and holistic support, we aim to break the barriers that prevent them from reaching their potential. Through this initiative, we seek financial sponsorships to cover the educational expenses of selected special children, ensuring that they receive the necessary resources and support for their holistic development.
Objective:
The primary objective of this sponsorship program is to provide financial assistance to a special child, enabling them to receive an inclusive education that caters to their specific needs. The sponsorship will cover various aspects, including tuition fees, specialized learning materials, assistive technology, therapy sessions, and extracurricular activities.
Donate to an educational sponsorship and save a child's future:
· The Sponsor a child scheme helps individual children at Aakaash to connect with specific donors who had registered their names in the programme.
· The donors are encouraged to sponsor a child for a minimum period of at least one academic year or more.
· Our social workers monitor the progress of the children and share an update with the concerned donor about the impact he/she has made in the child’s life.
