Help to empower and educate a poor slum-girl

Over 16 million children living in India don’t attend school and around 66 out of 100 who drop out are girls. Instead they are found taking care of siblings, doing household chores or working as child labourers. Economic constraints coupled with no female teachers and poor school infrastructure forces them to drop out.

In the slums of Delhi, we identified over 1000 girls aged 6 to 14 who were not attending school. Our aim is to bridge the gap between where they are and where they should be educationally so they can eventually enrol into regular institutions.

Lesson times are kept flexible to adjust to their routines. This way, their parents also encourage their attendance at our evening classes before they enter a government school.

Regular informal classes held over three years has seen 480 underprivileged girls, who originally abandoned their education, enter mainstream schools this year.

A meagre Rs. 6,000 could completely change the life of a disadvantaged girl by ensuring that she concludes her education.
