Sponsor education for disadvantaged school girls

In 2011, the female literacy rate in Bihar was recorded at 53.33%; that’s over half of the state’s female population.

The problem is, girls, especially those belonging to Muslim families, have to give up on education due to deep-rooted cultural restrictions (it was not considered important to educate women as they were seen as merely the house-help), economic constraints, or to manage the house in the absence of their mothers who work daily wage labour.

This project will open up new educational opportunities for girls. By promoting education in minority Muslim communities, young women will not only receive special training offered in life skills but also be educated similar to girls their own age.

Our life skills training workshops are intended to ensure that girls receive basic skills in language, maths, science and art, thereby equipping them to attend senior school as a regular student.

To date, 300 girls have enrolled into 10 centres across our working area. Our target is to enrol 300 more by the end of the year.

With your support, IZAD will be able to continue to work with deprived girls by educating them at our centres in Bihar villages.
