Story

Over 100 million people in India suffer from Kidney disease and about 1 million suffer from chronic Kidney Disease. 14,00,000 organs are required annually in India and 5 lakh people die due to their non-availability. Only about 7000 Organs and tissues have been recovered over the last 18 years.

There is a huge social and religious stigma surrounding organ donation along with the general lack of awareness, infrastructure, transplant facilities and transplant surgeons in the country, hence spreading awareness around general health of vital organs - specially the Kidneys and organ donation is the need of the hour.

Why Kidney Health?

Over the next 5 years, half the country's population is in grave danger of becoming diabetic and a bigger chunk being diagnosed with Hypertension. The larger issue at hand is the fact that these lifestyle diseases will lead to more chronic irreversible illnesses especially to do with our Kidneys. Hence Spreading Hope Foundation is engaged in spreading awareness on Organ donation, kidney disease, Kidney health and care across India. We have been engaged in spreading awareness through Pan-India drives, launching of kidney health checks and management of the disease in various parts of India. Spreading Hope hopes to address this problem through a series of educational videos on Kidney health.

To create a fun video series that addresses topics of interest for patients with kidney disease and their family.

These videos will include information about diet and lifestyle modifications as they pertain to a kidney patient, different kinds of kidney disease - symptoms/diagnosis/treatment, dialysis modalities, and kidney transplant. They will be constructed to provide both basic medical information in lay- man terms as well as practical information such as demonstrations of procedures that a kidney patient may experience (ex. Peritoneal dialysis). Each video may be at most five minutes in length. The videos are not meant to be rigid and didactic. They will be casual and conversational while addressing key medical, practical information, while also discussing psychosocial issues faced by patients and their care givers.

The team of people working on the videos series include:

  1. Dr. Pallavi Patri, is the Chief Nephrologist at Columbia Asia Hospital Sarjapur in Bangalore an American Board-Certified doctor in Nephrology and Kidney Transplantation who attended Medical School at Mount Sinai School of Medicine and completed Nephrology/Hypertension/Kidney Transplantation Fellowship at Weill Cornell Medical College in New York City.
  2. Lourd Vijay, an internationally acclaimed, Latin Dance Instructor, a Chronic Disease survivor and a Kidney Organ Recipient.

The campaigns have been designed to reach an audience of over 35 million people over a period of 1 year.

The videos are going to featured on youtube and will be promoted through social media platforms like instagram and Facebook.
