For thousands of poverty-stricken children in urban slums, quality education is a distant dream. Turning Point aims to make this dream come true by bringing a significant development in the lives of children. We target retention and age-appropriate learning outcomes for children residing in resettlement urban slums in Perumbakkam through the provision of non-formal remedial learning centre catering afterschool support to children.
About 14,000 households were shifted and resettled in Perumbakkam by TNSCB, where there is inadequate access to schools to slum children. There are always many chances to drop-out of schools due to various reasons including high dense of classroom, poor quality of teaching and other social causes.
Expenditure on children’s education has become a superfluous burden for some parents and therefore convert the least choice to send their children to schools. Meeting some of the incidentals expenditures could bring hassle-free continuation in schools.
Motivation and Learning Centers in preventing grounds of dropouts and provide age-appropriate after-school activities and promote meaningful childhood:
Presently, we have been given a constructed structure to accommodate 60 children by TNSCB. There are a number of children yet to be accommodated through motivation and learning centres. However, we propose to enrol 100 children every year, and therefore we require additional structure for 1200 square feet in available open space. We are proposing FRP Blue Prefabricated Temporary Building at low cost.
For many parents, even small expenses for school bag, stationary and qualitative uniforms can be a serious issue. By providing a new school uniform for a child, we are taking away one expense and helping to relieve the yearly pressure that some families go through in sending their child to school.
Each child will receive a set of 2 custom-tailored uniforms and a pair of Footwear. This is s a great way to support the education of children as the children will be able to wear their new uniforms to school proudly.
Supplemental instruction to ensure that all children achieve the defined age-/class-specific learning levels; Improve the quality of education of the beneficiaries to the desired measurable level which can be assessed and reported through school examination; Awareness generated amongst parents and teachers regarding the learning outcomes;
The proposed Motivation and Learning Centers will have curriculum content is designed to further the following ideals: All children should become cultured, educated and self-respecting citizens; children’s scientific temper should be nurtured; the habit of self-learning should be encouraged; The proposed curriculum includes subjects such as language studies, mathematics, science, general and developmental knowledge, aesthetics, social skills, and physical fitness and relaxation. In particular, it emphasizes opportunities for girls to express themselves freely in speech, drawing, singing, drama, and other activities that help them to become socially competent, culturally creative citizens. School retention is ensured, and the dropout rate is controlled, school attendance monitored, progress is reported to parents, and joyful of childhood ensured.
