Story

Summary

To address the problem of school dropouts and children related to their studies, Agastya Volunteers visit Community Centres in the evenings and provide remedial lessons. The children are also provided with interactive learning sessions through, singing, dancing, hands on experience on Science, Maths and Digital literacy which makes learning a great fun for them.

Challenge

The issue of dropouts is increasing in India, especially, in rural locations. The primary reason for this is chronic absenteeism, need to supplement family income through household chores or domestic work, school-related expenses are high, learning challenges of students, lack of individual teacher attention, all leading to poor learning levels in rural schools and eventually drop out from school.

Solution

The project "Operation Vasantha" is highly interactive and empowering initiative of Agastya, addressing the problem of school dropouts and children since 2009. The Agastya identified Volunteers (local college trained students) educate and inspire weaker students and school dropouts from their villages by providing remedial lessons after they complete their school and day's work. The project helps students and school dropouts to continue learning and join back to regular classes in school.

Long-Term Impact

The project will lead to trigger positive behavioral shifts that lead to curious, confident and humane individuals engaging creatively in their communities and eventually mainstreaming school drop outs. It will also elevate the educational status of children in every village and transform the level of empowerment in communities in future. Children will be able to tackle local societal problems and come up with solutions to these issues by using four simple steps- "Feel, Imagine, Do & Share."

Agastya International Foundation's Operation Vasantha program is a community-based initiative that aims to provide children with a safe and nurturing environment where they can learn, play, and explore their curiosity. The program primarily functions as an after-school program, offering a variety of engaging and interactive activities to children. The Operation Vasantha program is designed to ignite a passion for learning and foster holistic development in children. It focuses on hands-on learning, creative expression, and building essential life skills. Through a range of activities such as experiments, games, art, storytelling, and interactive sessions, children are encouraged to actively participate in their own learning process. The program is implemented in various settings, including schools, community centers, and even homes. Trained facilitators lead the sessions, creating a supportive and stimulating environment for children to thrive. These facilitators are passionate individuals who are dedicated to nurturing the potential of each child and fostering their overall well-being. Our OV centers begin their day with a range of engaging activities that foster personal growth and development.

These activities include:

1.Prayer and Meditation: We encourage our students to start their day with a moment of reflection and inner peace, allowing them to center themselves and prepare for the day ahead.

2. Homework: Our dedicated staff ensures that students have a quiet and supportive environment to complete their homework assignments, promoting academic excellence and discipline.

3. Agastya Hands-On Activities: Through interactive and experiential learning, we provide students with the opportunity to engage in practical activities that enhance their understanding of various subjects.

4. Books Reading through Stories: We believe in the power of storytelling to ignite imagination and cultivate a love for reading. Our students explore a wide range of books, enabling them to broaden their knowledge and develop their language skills.

5. Reading, Writing & My Library: Our centers provide a well-stocked library where students can immerse themselves in a world of literature. We encourage them to not only read but also express their thoughts through writing, fostering creativity and critical thinking.

6. Doubts Clarification: Our dedicated teachers are always available to address any doubts or questions that students may have, ensuring a thorough understanding of the subjects they are studying.

7. Human Values/Achievers Interaction: We believe in nurturing well-rounded individuals, and therefore, we provide opportunities for students to interact with accomplished individuals who can inspire and guide them towards success.

8. Extracurricular Activities: We understand the importance of holistic development, and thus, we offer a range of extracurricular activities such as sports, arts, and music, allowing students to explore their passions and talents.

9. Open-ended Questions: To encourage critical thinking and problem-solving skills, we pose open-ended questions that challenge students to think beyond the surface level, fostering intellectual growth and curiosity.

At our OV centers, we strive to create a stimulating and nurturing environment that supports the overall development of our students through these diverse activities.

Throughout April, our team diligently covered a total of 69,771 exposures across 82 Operation Vasantha centers situated around our esteemed Kuppam Campus. This remarkable achievement demonstrates our commitment to reaching out and making a positive impact in the community. Continuing our efforts, May and June witnessed our unwavering dedication as we consistently engaged with 73 centers, leading to an impressive 61,480 and 60,828 exposures respectively. These numbers reflect our relentless pursuit of our mission and the significant strides we have made in expanding our reach.

By actively connecting with these centers, we have not only increased our exposure count but also fostered meaningful connections within the community. Our unwavering commitment to making a difference is evident in the substantial number of individuals we have reached and impacted. As we move forward, we remain steadfast in our pursuit of excellence, continuously striving to expand our reach and positively influence the lives of those we encounter.

Feedback:

''The OV Center has been helpful in enhancing my practical knowledge and improving my English language skills. As a TM student, I initially struggled with reading and writing in English, but thanks to the center, I have made significant progress and can now speak and read with ease. Additionally, during holidays, the center serves as a valuable resource for reinforcing my understanding of various subjects through hands-on learning experiences. This not only aids in my current studies but also prepares me for future academic pursuits and higher education.''

"Operation Vasantha is an incredibly valuable program. Many parents hesitate to send their children for tuition due to their own financial constraints and the inconvenience of traveling to town. However, OV not only provides education to these children but also enhances my knowledge and enriches my teaching profession. I am sincerely grateful to Agastya for this opportunity."
