Support Computer Education in Government Primary Schools in Punjab

Computers are an essential part of the information age. However, basic technology and computer skills are missing in the lives of majority of low-income students studying in government primary schools. Few have computers at home and computer conditions at their schools are typically abysmal. According to the ASER 2018 Report, only 4% of government schools in Punjab have computers in working condition fit for use by students. Even when computers are available, there is a lack of trained professionals or proper curriculum to teach the latest computer skills to the children. These are tremendous barriers for those who can barely make ends meet. That is why Edumust is dedicated to helping change this by providing computer skills education to children from an early age. This essential skill is in great demand, providing a much-needed foundation for children and equipping them for future success.

Edumust sets up computer labs in government primary schools and hires a trained professional to teach computer skills to children following a research based curriculum that takes children through the basics of using a computer through to advanced computer skills. We form partnerships with the schools directly to ensure dedicated and uninterrupted instruction of 2 hours per week for each child to allow for mastery of the subject. Till now, Edumust computer labs are operational in 4 schools in Jalandhar educating over 500 students annually.

Over the last 3 years, we have built a successful computer program with a strong foundation. Our intended impact is that students graduating from our program should be computer literate with working knowledge of programs such as Paint, Notepad, MS Office (Word, Powerpoint, Excel) etc. along with typing speeds in the range of 15-20 words per minute. Most importantly, we hope that students leave our program feeling equipped with the skills and confident about being a part of the technology-driven age. In terms of our reach, we are planning to scale this program to 20 schools, reaching over 2500 children, by April 2020.
