Digital Equity(reg as CodingForAll Foundation) is a non-profit organisation leading the digital inclusion movement in India by teaching digital literacy in regional Indian languages to students who do not have access to a computer.
“Digital divide is the gulf that exists between those who have access to information and communications technologies and those who do not. The digital divide significantly diminishes the quality of life, economic opportunity, and social interaction for those without access. Current data paints a bleak picture of this reality in India. 9 in every 10 households in India does not have access to a computer. 90% of Indians cannot read or write in English. 8 out of 10 jobs will require computer proficiency. Where you are born should not dictate your potential as a human being. Digital literacy is the language of the future that will open the doors of opportunity for our students and help them break the cycle of poverty. It is a fundamental skill that every child should be equipped with. Digital Equity is bridging the digital divide and empowering children to build a brighter tomorrow for themselves through digital literacy,” says M. Omkar Nath, Chief Executive Officer, Digital Equity.
Digital Equity is on a mission to equip over 400 million children with the tools to thrive in our ever-evolving digital world.
Through its flagship programme in government and affordable private schools, DE runs digital literacy course called Digital Essentials for high school children in India who do not have access to a computer. By the end of the course, the kids understand mobile and computer technology, how the internet works, how to write emails, browse the internet for research and filter out misinformation, how to present an idea using slides, create documents and notes and work on collaborative projects, how to use spreadsheets to store and analyse data, communicate with anyone across the globe using live translator tool, and how to mindfully use social media for their benefit,” explains Omkar.
“Oftentimes, even if the infrastructure is available, an efficient technical educator is difficult to find. To solve this issue, DE establishes digital literacy clubs in districts with enthusiastic local college students, offering them internships to work as facilitators for students in nearby schools. Every year new members join the club receive intensive training through our in-house programme and then facilitate the course to students in nearby government or affordable private schools. Aligned with DE's values, our facilitators conduct their sessions with an empathetic, inclusive and engaging learning approach. Children feel respected and heard, which makes them eager to attend school, especially for our classes,” adds Omkar.
Help Digital Equity minimise the digital divide in India
Only 4 million out of 450 million children have access to computer education resources in India.
The lack of skills and awareness of opportunities will widen this gap with time. “If these 400+ million children are not supported today then their ability to access opportunities in the near future will drastically diminish. Having worked with 500+ children through the pandemic, we are now in urgent need of funds to reach and conduct classes for 3000 children across 5 districts in the new academic year. Please support Digital Equity's mission and help solve the digital divide crisis in India," appeals Omkar.
