Rural India is home to more than 200 million children who come from various socially, economically and historically deprived communities such as scheduled castes and the scheduled tribes. In addition, rural India substantially lacks in educational outcomes when compared to urban India. The problem is further compounded by the fact that in a vast country like India, it is difficult to deliver quality education services across far flung villages even for the government, and it is much easier to concentrate on cities, which are touted as the growth engines of tomorrow’s India. Even private investment in education is centered in cities as parents in rural India simply lack the paying capacity to sustain a social business.

In ACER reports as well as government publications, Uttar Pradesh bears the dubious label of being the most educationally backward state. Since the promoters too belong to Uttar Pradesh, starting the Gurukul mission from Uttar Pradesh seemed to be a natural choice.

Gurukul Public School is a charitable school providing free English medium education to rural underprivileged children through one on one mentorship by accomplished socially conscious individuals across the world. This model not only makes quality education accessible to even the most underprivileged children, but also gives the opportunity for the mentors to connect back and discover the joy of giving.

Gurukul is a dream; a dream set in the belief that given the right opportunity, every child can flourish, and a belief in education being a social emancipation tool that can overcome social barriers of our society. Gurukul is an attempt at spreading the gift of education to the millions of children who languish without proper education in the far-flung villages of U.P.

We all understand the impact of education on our lives as well as on the lives of our children but we forget to think about the children on the other side of the spectrum. Education can have the same or even more far-reaching impact on the lives of the underprivileged children. These are the children who come from families suffering from poverty, illiteracy and ignorance. Most of them are first generation learners and we have seen over the past few years that given the right opportunities and environment, these children too can blossom into productive citizens of tomorrow and can in turn provide better future to their own children. We at Gurukul believe that education truly has the potential to bring families out of poverty. Once our children are educated, our societies and communities improve. Education gives them the dreams and hope of a better tomorrow. Our school is trying to provide the same opportunities to these children as any other private school without putting the financial burden on the children and that is were we need people like you to join us in this journey. We have successfully moved from 28 to 1000 kids in a span of 5 years.
