The absence of irrigation and lack/excess of monsoon leads to crop failure and subsequent seasonal distress migration of farmers to other states. Secondly, Odisha agriculture is largely an unorganized sector, there is no systematic planning in cultivation, farmers work on lands of uneconomical sizes, institutional finances are not available and minimum purchase prices of the government do not, in reality, reach the poorest farmer.
Organizing planned effort in collaboration with people, Government and partner agencies to provide irrigation facilities for more than one crop while promoting market focused agriculture programs. This is done by
• Developing agriculture in the hilly and non-irrigated area.
• Creating infrastructure for irrigation
• Increasing the ratio of irrigated land with respect to the total cultivated areas
• Increasing agricultural productivity
• Motivating and creating scope for more than one crop
• Arranging agricultural demonstrations, exhibitions, and group discussions.
• Educating farmers and their families about new technology in agriculture.
• Forming SHG groups & linking them to the financial institutes
1. Support creation of sources for assured regular farm income from durable assets like developed land, construction of canals and field channels and community nurseries in convergence with the government.
2. Promotion of remunerative mixed farming and dryland farming
3. Training for the youth and people of productive age groups on SRI and other such improved farming practices
4. Capacity building of the members and leaders of the community institutions on institutional management
5. Service institutions would be established for the primary producers to take control over the market for improved livelihood system that suits their own community.
6. Breaking the isolation of the marginal and small farmers through creation and building of alternative exclusive organizational space for them and strengthening their collective bargaining power.
7. Promotion of SHGs to reduce the dependency of the primary producers on external private credit providers
8. Women groups would act as economic institutions to take up post-production value addition and processing activities at the village and Panchayat level.
9. Approximately 3000 Scheduled Tribe & Scheduled Caste poor farming families from 10 villages in 03 GPs of Daringbadi block of Kandhamal district, Odisha would be benefited.
