Lata lost her husband and almost lost her own life to diabetes and hypertension only because the required treatment was more than they could afford. "My husband was the sole breadwinner of our five-member family. When he succumbed to diabetes and hypertension, my struggles increased. I too was suffering from diabetes and acute hypertension, and with no medical insurance or means to pay for the exorbitant treatment, I soon became bedridden. Swasth Foundation saved my life with timely medication and necessary healthcare. I would have languished and passed away just like my husband, if it weren't for their selfless, lifesaving support. Now, I'm fully recovered. My daily prayer is that Swasth receives the resources to help more financially weak families struggling with health shocks," shares Lata.

Seemingly common among the urban poor, ‘silent killer’ ailments such as diabetes and hypertension can be kept in check with regular medication and routine healthcare. "Early diagnosis and treatment at primary care centres is the best way to reduce the incidence of health shocks. But with insufficient public primary care clinics and poor infrastructure at the available clinics, people in urban low-income neighbourhoods are left with one of two options - to depend on private healthcare providers that charge enormous rates, or to risk life and limb without any treatment at all. This neglect of medical conditions often results in health shocks," informs Sundeep Kapila, Co-founder, Swasth Foundation.

“At Swasth Foundation, we are committed to solving the primary preventive healthcare struggles faced by the urban poor, through our Swasth India Medical Centres (SIMC) network of no-frills, just-around-the corner, one-stop primary care clinics that focus on providing healthcare solutions for 'silent killers' to low-income neighbourhoods across Mumbai,” adds Sundeep.

For over a decade, Swasth Foundation has served more than 1.5 million patients with cumulative patient savings of ₹25 crores, through their clinics managing chronic diseases through early detection, protocol-based management and sustained lifestyle changes. Services at their clinics are provided free of cost, and range from routine health check-ups and medical tests to providing Drugs / Medicines and even Yoga programmes.
