Sona was just 18 when she got married. Her in-laws had promised she could continue her work, but after the marriage, they refused to let her. She was not allowed to use the phone or go to work. Deciding to take a break from her in-laws, she moved into our office space and resumed her work at a school in the small village of Amdikheda.
Mera Gaon Meri Dunia is filled with young leaders dedicated to leading change. The initiative began when our co-founders moved back to their villages to support their communities.
Margaret Mead once said, "Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it's the only thing that ever has." Mera Gaon Meri Dunia aims to nurture 20-30 individuals in each district who possess pure intent and the skills to lead and mobilize people for change. We strive to develop the best youth in the community to work for the community and instill a sense of collective ownership by encouraging them to own the change instead of migrating for livelihood opportunities.
Civil society organizations work to ensure equity and dignity for people, yet raising resources for honorariums is often a significant challenge for any NGO. According to the 2023 Dipstic Compassion and Benefits Benchmark report, field employees earn an average income of 15k, while managerial roles average 40k. These individuals work with both head and heart, and it's time we not only retain them but also support them in getting what they deserve.
Currently, 32 people are leading Mera Gaon Meri Dunia across different villages, and we have a zero percent attrition rate. We have nurtured students like Shivam, who was selected for JNV from among 700 applicants across the district. We support youth like Manisha, a girl from a village of less than a thousand people, who not only transformed her school but also selected for the prestigious Ban Ki-moon Award for young leader
We help principals like Premlata, who is leading school transformations and plans to continue serving after retirement. We are a beacon of hope for parents like Rama Ji, who earns less than 300 rupees per day yet contributed 2000 INR and over 24 hours of labor for school development. We empower leaders like Nidhika, who has created a space where boys and girls in remote villages play together with respect. We foster environments where an eighth-grade boy named Sandeep cooks meals, and a girl named Nisha pursues her interest in electrical engineering, having worked to bring electricity to her government school for the first time since independence.
We are confident that change will come; what we need are individuals who will take ownership and dedicate 5 to 10 years to creating this change. We believe that when local leaders spearhead change, it becomes sustainable and meaningful for thousands of people.
Let's embrace the mission of Mera Gaon Meri Dunia with belief and commitment by reading the lyrics of this song by Nimo of the album ‘Empty Hands’.
Whatever grows will grow,,Whatever dies will die
Whatever works will work, Whatever flies will fly,
Whatever fails will fail|, What’s meant to soar will soar,
I am planting seeds nothing more
This time we ask you to support the people who are planting seeds.
