Story

In 2018 alone, 9.6 Million people worldwide are estimated to die from cancer. However, 30%-35% of all cancer can be prevented (World Health Organisation).

The World Health Organization (WHO) defines cancer as “the uncontrolled growth and spread of cells”. It is the second leading cause of death worldwide. India has the third highest number of cancer cases in the world, after China and the US.

Childhood Leukemia (commonly known as blood cancer) is the most common form of cancer amongst children, accounting for approximately 32% of all cancer cases in children younger than 15 years of age. Acute lymphoblastic leukemia is the most common form of childhood cancer- accounting for approximately 75% of all cases of childhood leukemia.

According to the Huffington Post, only 1 in 10 of childhood cancer cases reported in India receive complete therapy. The cure rates for common childhood cancers are 80% in developed countries, however in India they have remained abysmally low at around 30%.

Each one of us can make a difference by sponsoring a child’s treatment or enabling their access to supportive service.

The Yuvraj Singh Foundation has created a targeted programme aimed at supporting the treatment of children suffering from acute lymphoblastic leukemia. Through the programme, we support beneficiaries from marginalized and underprivileged backgrounds. One of the key features of this programme is to create a well-planned treatment pathway, encompassing- diagnostic tests, investigations, evidence based second opinion, chemotherapy, supportive care, and counseling and post treatment support.

The programme will provide financial support for the treatment of 25 children suffering from acute lymphoblastic leukemia. This will be done by providing holistic treatment and care to the identified cancer patients, at eminent cancer hospitals which have the three following specializations: medical oncology, surgical oncology and radiation oncology. The financial support provided will include - cost of diagnostic tests, investigations, evidence based second opinion, chemotherapy, supportive care and medicines. One of the unique features of the programme is its holistic nature and thus as a process counseling and post treatment support to cancer patients and their caregivers will be provided by certified counselors.
