If anyone thinks that the economic status is what determines the Indianess, it will be proved to you wrong in a second by this young lady - Thenmozhi. Despite being born in poverty, she learned to think rich about others and their welfare. When in school, she joined NSS and participated in many social activities such as rallies to create awareness on HIV and child rights etc.
It was the local social worker who noted her academic potential and the challenges that she faces at home who chose to refer her to the Hope House - a children's home in Vellore. Her mother runs a roadside idli (rice cakes) shop and her father was unhelpful. To protect her daughter, her mother wouldn't let her come to the shop but Thenu (as fondly called as) would help her mother prepare the ingredients at home. According to the Social Worker, to avoid distress at home, she would come and study under the street light in front of their home. When she was at the Hope House, she lived an exemplary life to lead by example.
In 11th and 12th grade, Thenu studied Maths and Biology and passed. She got admission to B. Sc Nursing at a reputed nursing institute in February 2021 but her parents are struggling to pay. Hope House helped them to pay the part of the expenses but we are afraid if they don't make the timely payments, her academics might be interrupted.
Hence, we at the Hope House decided to do a fundraiser to give peace of mind to Thenu to let her know that there are generous-hearted individuals (like herself) willing to support her educational expenses. Can we count on you?
