Story

1 in 8 children in India in the age group of 2–9 years have or are at risk of developmental disabilities such as autism spectrum disorder, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, learning disabilities, language delays, and others. This translates to over 50 million children with or at risk of disabilities in India. Out of these, not even a quarter have access to quality care.

Children with disabilities are significantly more likely to be out of school, have mental health challenges, be bullied, and have poorer life outcomes. Childhood disability is a complex issue that cuts across multiple dimensions of family and society, including healthcare systems, education, community life and policy, and children with disabilities and their families often fall through the cracks.

Ummeed Child Development Center was founded in 2001 by Dr. Vibha Krishnamurthy, a developmental pediatrician, with the vision of helping children with and at risk of developmental disabilities reach their full potential and be included in society.

Our work spans:

  1. Direct clinical services (diagnosis and therapy) for children and families
  2. Training and Capacity Building (of doctors, therapists, teachers, community workers and others)
  3. Research (relevant to the field of child development and disabilities)
  4. Awareness and Advocacy (to change attitudes towards inclusion)

Since its inception, Ummeed has provided more than 1,35,000+ clinical services to more than 14,500 children and families at its Center, trained 8,500+ professionals (doctors, therapists, teachers, and community workers) and over 3000 caregivers from all over India and several low-income countries. Ummeed has reached over 4,30,000 children through these trainings.

Over 80 % of children and families served annually are from low-income backgrounds.

All trainings conducted by Ummeed are free of cost.

Through our dedicated team of over 120 members - developmental pediatricians, therapists (occupational and physical therapists, autism intervention specialists, counsellors, speech therapists, special educators, social workers) & other non-professionals, we strive to narrow the gap between the need and access to the right type of intervention.

As a not-for-profit organization, Ummeed relies heavily on the generosity of individuals and organizations to provide the best-in-class services as well as work on new ideas and programs. You too can make this possible by giving generously. A donation of Rs. 5,000 can support* five children with developmental disabilities this year.

Your donation will help in early identification & intervention of more children with developmental disabilities & conduct awareness & training programs with families, professionals, caregivers and community health workers.

We thank you for your generous and continuous support.

*Support includes direct clinical services to children & families and training services to professionals & caregivers
