Story

“Children from low socio-economic and vulnerable backgrounds are unable to cope with poverty.”

In India, internal inequalities stifle the opportunities of children based on their caste, religion, gender and poverty. These disadvantaged children are over-represented in government schools of India.

Currently, there are 12.8 crore children in government schools, many of whom live in poverty with a household income of ₹ 250 or less, a day. Sadly, them being unable to cope with their reality leads to reduced attentiveness, lack of curiosity, demotivation, powerlessness, shame and anger, etc. This not only affects the academic performance but also their resilience, relationships, mental and emotional state, overall productivity and life choices.

What?

Labhya partners with Indian state governments to co-create and ensure effective implementation of a state-wide daily wellbeing class that is integrated into the school day. We have co-created and are ensuring effective implementation of the world’s largest and India’s first at-scale wellbeing programs. Labhya’s programs are enabling 24 lakh vulnerable children across 3 Indian states to cope and become healthy, effective learners.

Programs co-created by Labhya:

  • Happiness Curriculum with Delhi Government
  • Anandam Pathyacharya with Uttarakhand Government

How?

The core emotional effects of poverty can be targeted by Social Emotional Learning (SEL): a global educational best practice for improving resilience, relationship skills and willingness to learn in vulnerable children. SEL encompasses essential skills like emotion regulation, reflection, critical thinking and perseverance.

Our approach has been now selected as one of the World's Top 13 Wellbeing programs by Lego Foundation and HundrED

Labhya Foundation’s programs have translated into emotionally safe spaces in classrooms, where children learn and practice social and emotional skills like mindfulness, relationship building, action-orientation, and emotion control.

More importantly, our children have begun to demonstrate high levels of critical thinking, perseverance, reflection, and empathy, thus getting on a path to lifelong learning. Further, our programs have enabled significant behavioral changes among students and positively shifted student-teacher relationships.
