About Breakthrough:

Breakthrough is a 24-year-old organization working primarily with adolescents and young adults, in schools and communities, to make gender-based violence unacceptable by changing the culture that permits it.

As you know, it is at a young age that children absorb gender norms from their surroundings. Our work with nearly 1.5 million adolescents in schools and communities reshapes these norms and beliefs before they become a part of their behaviour. When gender norms change, everything for the girl changes. They can dream big, take control of their lives, and reach their full potential!

Our mission is led by young people aged 11 to 25 years. As they rise against gender-based violence, we support them with media tools that shape public narratives and inspire people to build a world of equality, dignity, and justice.

Breakthrough's Impact in Haryana and UP:

1. An increase in girls’ age at marriage by nearly 2 years (1 year 11 months)
2. 17% increase in the number of girls aged 15 – 18 years accessing health services
3. 6% decrease in the number of adolescent school dropouts during the Covid pandemic
4. 19.4% increase in mobility of girls for things like going to the market or visiting a friend
5. 17.6% increase in intergenerational dialogue between girls and parents
6. Significant shifts in gender attitudes of boys and girls after 2.5 years of exposure to TkT curriculum; children from the most gender-regressive homes (bottom 20%)have attitudes that match children from regular homes
7. Attitudes persist 5 years after baseline: roughly 16% of adolescents converted from gender-regressive thinking to more equitable attitudes
