Hi, my name is Melvin Philip. I have been a part of the Bookwallah organization for the past two years, volunteering at their King Castle library. It was here that I first met Raj.

Raj joined us in 2019, coming from a background of adversity and hardship. Growing up in an abusive environment, he witnessed his mother’s resilience as she fought to provide a new life for him and his brother. Initially, Raj was a reserved and distrustful boy, interacting only with his close friend.

However, over time, I have witnessed an incredible transformation in Raj. He started to open up, eagerly looking forward to our Sunday sessions. “I look forward to each Sunday because that means meeting the volunteers. They have made this space more fun and safer for us to be ourselves, and for that, I will forever be grateful to Bookwallah,” Raj shares with a smile.

Today, Raj has developed a strong social-emotional foundation, evident in his high hope score. We have recognized his potential by giving him leadership responsibilities as a library monitor, and soon he will be promoted to an intern. This journey from a distrustful boy to a confident leader is a testament to the impact of Bookwallah’s support and the nurturing environment we provide.
