Technology Training For Visually Challenged People

In a world of ever evolving technology, you might wonder how people with visual impairments can take advantage of the latest computer technology. The visually impaired, like many people with disabilities, have been using computers for decades with the help of software and hardware that have continued to improve over the years.

Divya Jyothi Trust Computer Training Center provides tutorial-training services to visually impaired students. On completion of the training, students will be able to use common computer-processing applications and will be able to read electronic text on screen (with the use of special software), download information from the Internet for reading or printing,browse online newspapers, do online research and continuously upgrade their skills. The training is offered free of cost by the Trust. Our goal is to work towards creating IT awareness and providing knowledge and specialized skills to empower our students in order to make them self-sufficient and independent. We train students on the use of special software such as JAWS, KURZWEIL, and MAGIC. Computer education is provided to students who have passed 10th standard.

Many visually impaired only dream of operating computers, which is not possible without the appropriate software installed and trainers who are specialised in teaching computers to visually impaired. At a time, when Digital India is the vision of India to progress, there are 10 million visually impaired people in India who are deprived of accessing this necessity. Normal IT Labs/Coaching Centre's are unable to provide blinds a specialised faculty and devices. They are not usually encouraged to discover their passion like singing, dancing etc.

The students at our centre are trained to operate the system using a KEYBOARD with the help of special software like JAWS (Job Access with Speech - to read electronic texts on screen), KURZWEIL (for reading printed text), MAGIC (to magnify the text to help a person who is partially blind to read). This will enable them to lead a normal life and fill their lives with knowledge which they had always been deprived of. We also provide vocational training for women to help them pursue a career as a call centre operator, reception, I&R specialist, which requires computer knowledge. We have been organizing sports and cultural activities for the kids to exhibit their hidden talent. Now we plan to hire choreographers and trainers to hone their skills.

We aim at taking this concept forward to remotest part of our country. This will ensure that technology is not a stumbling block in their progress. Rather it is a source of adding meaning to their lives. We have started this project since 2011 benefiting more than 15,000 beneficiaries which include both direct and indirect beneficiaries.
