The Reading Ladder

Ashraya’s Reading Program seeks to address the widespread lack of language exposure and literacy among marginalized communities. Children in these communities often lag behind in reading and writing skills, which impacts their academic performance and critical thinking abilities. Additionally, many adults have limited educational backgrounds, restricting their employment opportunities and ability to support their children’s learning. To tackle these challenges, Ashraya has designed three targeted curriculum that cater to different age groups, ensuring holistic development and empowerment through literacy.

The Reading Ladder: Ashraya’s 3-Pronged Book Club

Ashraya’s new Reading Program builds a strong foundation for reading, critical thinking, and lifelong learning across age groups. Structured like a three-step ladder, the program grows with the child—from joyful discovery to advanced engagement with ideas.

At the first step, students from Grades 1 to 5 are introduced to the joy of reading through carefully selected, age-appropriate books. Trained teachers lead engaging activities that spark curiosity, while classroom libraries ensure that reading becomes a daily habit.

The second step focuses on Grades 6 to 10, where students deepen their understanding of English through literature analysis and the “CRE” method—Claim, Reason, Evidence. Debate sessions, discussions, and writing exercises help them develop critical thinking, communication, and expression.

At the third step, Beyond Hamari Shala supports advanced literacy. Older students access a wide range of texts and media, interact with experts, and participate in structured research forums. This stage encourages independent thought, collaboration, and confident expression.

At every level, The Reading Ladder supports children in becoming articulate, analytical, and socially aware individuals with a lifelong love for reading.
