The Ripple Effect: Transforming Communities with Access to Clean Water - The Sanchay Foundation

While the world talks about progress, the harsh reality is that universal access to safe, quality water remains a distant dream for countless disadvantaged communities. In India, the situation is dire, with surface water underutilized and groundwater over-exploited, leading to several contamination issues. Shockingly, one-third of the groundwater extracted in the country is unfit for consumption due to high levels of contaminants like fluoride, iron, and arsenic.

Imagine the daily struggle of countless Indians who have no choice but to consume this contaminated water. For them, it's a mater of survival, but it comes at a tremendous cost to their health. Excessive intake of fluoride can lead to a debilitating and incurable disease called Fluorosis, which ravages communities, especially school children.

Sanchay and WaterAid's mission is crystal clear: to create water-secure communities where every household has sustainable access to clean water, sanitation, and hygiene, through pipe water supply schemes and maintenance of these water supplies.

In many areas of the state of Chhattisgarh, drinking water is reportedly discovered to be excessively contaminated. Kanker district is thought to be the fluoride hotspot of India, with estimates indicating that 17 districts have high amounts of fluoride in their groundwater. This is where Sanchay and WaterAid step in.

This project is about more than just providing clean water. It's about empowerment. It's about education. It's about changing lives. Sanchay and WaterAid are working ; tirelessly to ensure that 15 schools and 4 communities have access to safe drinking water, free from contaminants. We’re spreading awareness about the dangers of fluoride and building the capacity of local communities to tackle this crisis head-on.

The impact is immense. Directly, around 900 school-going children and 5,000 community members benefit from fluoride awareness activities and improved access to safe drinking water. Moreover, 150 School Management Committee members, 30 school staff, and 40 Panchayati; Raj Institution members are being trained to combat fluoride contamination. But the ripple effect extends further, reaching around 10,000 community members beyond the project area, thanks to shared project learnings at the block level.
