Special needs children are often seen as a “curse” or “bad karma” and are tied up to furniture and locked up inside their houses to keep them away from people. In other cases, children with disabilities are also abandoned by their own parents who cannot care for them anymore. These children are sometimes left on the streets and other public places where they are vulnerable to criminals who mistreat them, beat them and force them to work. Sometimes, parents bring their disabled children to Asha Jyothi but pretend to be strangers who claim to have found the child outside - desperate to “get rid” of their child with physical or mental disabilities. 

Founded in 1998, Asha Jyothi is an NGO that cares for orphaned and abandoned special needs children that have no one to care for them. Based in Andhra Pradesh, the NGO is headed by Madhavi Latha, who has experience in Social Work, Psychology, Hearing Language and Speech Special Language. The NGO has been caring for special needs children for over 25 years and currently takes care of 75 special needs children with proper nutrition, medicines, round-the-clock medical care, rehabilitation, multiple therapies and personal guidance. 

A home where special needs children can thrive

Asha Jyothi started in a rented home with just 5 children. More than two decades later, the home cares for 75 children who have physical and mental disabilities like Autism, Cerebral Palsy, Down Syndrome, Polio and other intellectual disabilities which require special care and treatment. Asha Jyothi gives these special needs children regular and nutritious meals to build their physical strength and improve their immunity. The NGO also provides constant medical attention and has an in-house clinic, weekly doctors’ visits and partnerships with hospitals that specialize in the conditions that the children suffer from. The NGO is also equipped with a physiotherapy and hydrotherapy center and has qualified physiotherapists working with the children. 

When the children become adults, Asha Jyothi gives them training in computer skills and in vocational skills such as tailoring and arts & crafts to help them be qualified for jobs in the future. The NGO also offers the children counselling to build their confidence and other life skills. With all of these services, Asha Jyothi helps children overcome their disabilities and live dignified and self-sufficient lives. 

An NGO born from personal loss and grief

Asha Jyothi started when the founder’s daughter, who had mental disabilities, passed away. Overcome by grief, he wanted to help special needs children from disadvantaged backgrounds who could not afford or access special care. But now, the NGO is struggling to afford the equipment, resources, aids such as crutches and wheelchairs and specialized medical personnel to care for these children who are bright and capable - but just need opportunities and someone to believe in them. Asha Jyothi’s director Madhavi Latha shares that “there is a great value in helping children with special needs. From inception, if you give proper education and rehabilitation, we can help them be independent and see the beauty in their lives.”
