Story

“Parvathi Amma (name changed) was brought to Akshaya Trust by her son. He brought her here saying she was being taken to the hospital for treatment and he would be back in a while. It's been 8 years since that day. The phone number he gave to us was made up, even his address was false. Imagine the pain of the mother who was abandoned in such a heartless manner. She is not the only one. We have over 260 elderly parents here and most of them have faced abandonment, neglect or even abuse”, says G Gopalan, the founder of Akshaya Trust, the NGO taking care of abandoned seniors who have no one else in the world.

Without Gopalan’s Akshaya Trust, countless elderly would still be on the streets or simply deprived of the love and care they deserve. The NGO takes care of every single need of its seniors from Food to medical care and housing.

Your donation can enable Akshaya Trust to reach out to many more elderly with food and support. Contribute generously.

G Gopalan, a well-to-do businessman preferred to serve the elderly than living a peaceful retired life. He says that he was too shocked to see the state of the elderly, treated shabbily by their own children.

A lifeline for hundreds of neglected elderly

This organization attends to all their needs, providing comprehensive medical care and ensuring they recover from past traumas. To date, Akshaya Trust has served over 1,000 elderly parents most of whom were from extremely weak financial backgrounds and had no way to fend for themselves.

The beneficiaries of Akshaya Trust's shelter home for the abandoned elderly have faced unspeakable trauma, and yet they remain unbowed. Below is the field visit summary led by GIVE's Sandesh Ramachandran on 20/01/25 to Akshaya Trust's shelter home for the abandoned elderly.

The elderly beneficiaries of the shelter home come from diverse backgrounds, but all share the same fate of being abandoned or forgotten. Our goal is to preserve their dignity and help them live out the rest of their days in peace.

Upon interacting with the beneficiaries, we learned how they were satisfied with the facilities. They were still in high spirits from their recent celebration of the Pongal festival, sponsored by Akshaya Trust, who manage several such celebrations for the residents of their shelter home.

Our meeting with the shelter homes Management team was equally impressive. We were pleased to witness the comprehensive care for Akshaya Trust's beneficiaries, with an excellent caretaker-to-beneficiary ratio and a well-managed and informative system of stat tracking and outreach.

Their success is a result of your generous contributions. You must continue to support Akshaya Trust's every effort to provide a comfortable home for the most vulnerable in our society.
