This winter, help Dr. Bhagat rescue and care for abandoned elderly left on the streets

One winter night, Dr GP Bhagat got a call from somebody saying that an elderly mother who was clearly unwell and had been abandoned by her family under a tree. Dr Bhagat was helpless that night. “I had no vehicle to go to the spot and save the mother. I requested the person who called me to give that elderly mother some warm clothing and a blanket so that she can stay warm that night,” he says. Next day, when Dr Bhagat was about to leave to bring that mother to his Ashram, he was shocked to know that the mother had died in the cold that very night. “I was shocked. I vowed that I would never leave anybody on a wintry night like that. That rankles me to this day,” says Dr Bhagar. 

Dr Bhagat’s Guru Vishram Vridh Ashram is home to hundreds of abandoned elderly today who live in peace. He also goes around during winter months saving people from cold winter in Delhi and other places by giving homeless people warm blankets and clothes. “I don’t want anyone to die because of the cold, especially the homeless elderly. Imagine people dying of cold. It is inhumane if it is happening today.” 

Since 2003, SHEOWS (Saint Hardyal Educational and Orphans Welfare Society) has rescued over 10,000 elderly people from the streets and given them a home with care and support. Your support can give the elderly at the ashram and also those on the streets comfort, this winter. Donate now.

Safe and loving home

For 20 years, SHEOWS has been providing free shelter, nutritious food three times a day, clothing, medical care, recreation activities and emotional support to abused and disabled elderly people rescued from the streets of Delhi. The Guru Vishram Vridh Ashram has a dedicated rescue team that saves the elderly from the streets and gives them immediate medical care upon their arrival at the home. This happens around the clock. “I have a team that goes around in the night, especially during winters as that old mother dying plays in my head even after many years,” says Dr Bhagat.

SHEOWS has various medical facilities at the ashram including doctors and nurses, a physiotherapy unit, a pathology lab, a digital X-ray monitoring machine, and a pharmacy to provide 24-hour care to older adults anytime they require assistance, even during emergencies. Dr. Bhagat prioritizes the health of the seniors and ensures that they receive three balanced meals a day based on their precise health requirements. 

Need for the fundraiser

The humanitarian mission of SHEOWS is making an impact in the area, as more and more people are being rescued and brought to Guru Vishram Vridh Ashram. Those he cannot bring to the ashram are taken care of on the streets during winters. 

To meet the financial costs of running the home, SHEOWS needs support to continue providing the residents with all the facilities that they need, especially during winters. Also, each year, the number of residents increase at the ashram. Dr. Bhagat explains that as the number of residents is increasing, SHEOWS need support for food and medicines. “I request you to help these elderly parents lead a peaceful life.”
