Transform Schools

The problem we attempt to solve is "Poor learning levels amongst children in government secondary schools in India".  44% of children in Class 5 are only able to read Class 2 level text. Just seven out of ten children in Class 8 are able to read Class 2 text. Further Girls’ face inequitable access, participation, and learning in education. India’s Right To Education ensured near universal enrolment in elementary grades, but dropout rate at secondary is 4 times that of primary, particularly among girls. Evidence shows that girls’ educational achievement is significantly poorer than boys.Transition rate falls from 88.4% in upper primary to 67.8% in senior secondary (UDISE). The overall dropout rate in India in class 8 was at 9.3% (UDISE, 2016-17). The 13.2 million children in rural and 3.9 million children in urban government secondary schools each year need an urgent intervention that works at scale to improve their learning levels, support transition to higher education and better career opportunities. This is urgent requirement to skill what will be world’s largest workforce in 2027. 

Transform Schools has developed a powerful 200 hour targeted instruction programme for secondary school students - Transform Learning (TL). This proven, competency based program is delivered by trained government school teachers during school hours, to build foundational competencies and pre-requisites for class appropriate competencies and improve outcomes in Science, English, Mathematics, Hindi & Odia. 

Our programme promotes use of effective pedagogical practices including mastery learning, activity based and experiential learning, interactive methodology and peer learning which contributes to a sustained impact on teacher capacities and better student learning outcomes. Student assessments at the programme commencement and competency based worksheets and activities for students during the course of the programme aid continuous and systematic tracking of their progress and help teachers offer targeted instruction to appropriately support them. Transform Schools leverages State systems and resources to ensure systemic impact.

Our targeted instruction programme Transform Learning aims to impact learning outcomes of 6 million children across five States by end of 2020.

75% children demonstrate learning gains 

40% children will have a bucket jump - below class 3 to 3 to 5 to 8 level

20% children will attain class appropriate levels
