Transforming the Lives of the Irular Tribal Community

"No child should inherit poverty simply because of the community into which they are born."

Just a few kilometers away from the rapidly growing city of Chennai lives one of Tamil Nadu's most marginalized indigenous communities—the Irular Tribal Community. Despite living close to an urban centre, hundreds of Irular families continue to struggle for basic human rights, quality education, healthcare, sanitation, safe housing, and sustainable livelihoods.

For generations, the Irulars have remained socially excluded due to poverty, historical discrimination, low literacy, landlessness and lack of access to essential government services. Although classified as a Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Group (PVTG) in Tamil Nadu, many families continue to live on the margins of development with limited opportunities to improve their quality of life. Studies and development agencies working with Irular communities consistently report challenges such as school dropouts, poor maternal and child health, insecure livelihoods, inadequate sanitation and weak access to welfare schemes.

HELP Trust proposes a comprehensive community development programme to empower the Irular families of Agaram Sathya Nagar through integrated interventions focusing on education, health, sanitation, livelihood and community empowerment.
