INTRODUCTION

 Established in 2007, Yashoda Foundation is a not-for-profit organization that works to empower and develop marginalized and underprivileged communities with a strong commitment to unconditional support. The core mission of the foundation is to provide holistic learning opportunities to underprivileged children.

OUR EDUCATION INITIATIVES

The foundation’s flagship program is called Disha (meaning “direction”). Disha focuses on providing unique, safe, and imaginative learning spaces for the children from underprivileged communities called the “Community Learning Centres” as well as providing sponsorship to needy children. The Community Learning Centres (CLCs) focus on providing a well-rounded development by augmenting the children’s schooling and helping bridge any existing learning gaps to prepare them for higher education and future career. Thus, besides the academics, the CLCs focus on broadening their exposure through life skills, career exploration, spoken English, computer skills as well as extracurricular activities - sports, reading, music, art, health, and experiential science workshops, etc.

Initiated as a remedial learning project for the children at risk of dropping out of the mainstream education system, the Community Learning Centre program has now developed as a comprehensive and holistic program for children to enable them to become responsible future citizens of the world. Having started with one pilot Community Learning Centre (CLC) in a slum location in Hyderabad in the year 2014, gradually the program has expanded to sixteen locations across twin cities of Hyderabad–Secunderabad and one Mulugu District of Telangana State. The CLCs are linked to the nearest government schools for children’s mainstream formal education. The space in the government schools is used for establishing the CLCs. Under its sponsorship program, the foundation also extends sponsorship to children from different educational backgrounds to enable them to pursue higher education.

The foundation also has a digital learning platform called YF - Digital CLC that was initiated as a response to address the learning needs of the children during the COVID-19 pandemic. This has paved the way for a hybrid model of learning for children. The children, adolescent girls, in particular, are provided a programming course in collaboration with the GirlCode Humanitarian International Organization equipping the adolescent girls with computer skills as well as training them in coding - Python, web designing, and Photoshop at the DCLCs.

Currently, the Yashoda Foundation’s geographic area of operation is Telangana state, and specializes in working with the most deprived, vulnerable, and difficult-to-reach sections of children and their families in poor urban and peri-urban communities.

 To date, the foundation has impacted the lives of 958 children and their families through our education initiative.
