Untold Devastation of CYCLONE-AMPHAN in the COVID world!

20th of May would be remembered in the history when the extremely severe cyclonic storm Amphan pounded Odisha, West Bengal, and Bangladesh, leaving untold devastation not only in parts that were ready for it but also in areas that were unprepared. Cyclone Amphan has caused great damage in rural and urban areas in both Bengal and Odisha. According to reports 75+ lives were lost, majorly in this super cyclone. Thatched houses, small shops, livestock, trees, and crops have been ruined in the areas affected in both the States. Mostly families from vulnerable communities that have suffered the most and many of them have seen their homes and livelihoods destroyed. In the midst of the COVID19 outbreak, Cyclone Amphan has caused untold sufferings for the farmers, fishermen, and migrants whose homes are shut down and crops destroyed. We need to help victims of both these disasters. Anudip is responding and we request your support to this emergency response and help those who need it the most.

Cyclone Amphan has affected East Medinipur, South 24 Parganas, North 24 Parganas, and Kolkata districts in West Bengal and Kendrapara, Jagatsinghpur, Balasore, Bhadrak, Mayurbhanj and Puri in Odisha. Reports say, 72+ have died in Bengal and houses, crops, farmland have been completely wiped away. Fishermen have suffered great losses. The tidal wave broke embankments and many thousands of hectares of crops and farmland have been destroyed. More than 5000+ trees have been uprooted. With deep roots in the Sundarbans delta of River Ganges, Anudip Foundation has been constantly trying to reach out to our 1000+ employees and Anudip Alumni who are based in the South 24 Paraganas district of West Bengal. Our staff and Alumni, are now working as Relief Agents and in touch with the Panchayats and BDO offices to list the number of victims affected and volunteer in providing the essential relief aid to the ones in need. We have impacted nearly 1000+ people by providing immediate relief like tarpaulins, medical supplies, dry food, water purifiers, mosquito coils/nets, and other essentials to the affected families.

The tandem coming of Cyclone Amphan with the ongoing pandemic of the COVID-19 is a double whammy for the people of West Bengal and Odisha. Now we need to step forward and help the communities recover from the impact of the Cyclone Amphan and continue and cope with the challenges of COVID-19.
