Story

The terrifying sight of the Khir Ganga river violently surging through Dharali has left the nation in shock. Entire homes and roads were swallowed in moments as the raging waters, thick with silt, cascaded down the hills. Four lives have been tragically lost, many are still missing, and countless families now face unimaginable devastation.

Disaster response teams—including the NDRF, SDRF, and Indian Army—are working tirelessly in rescue operations. Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami called the situation "extremely distressing," with relief efforts underway on a war footing. Dharali, a crucial stopover for pilgrims and tourists en route to Gangotri, now lies in ruins—hotels, homestays, and livelihoods swept away without warning.

These survivors urgently need your help.

  • Emergency shelter for displaced families
  • Food supplies for those left with nothing
  • Clean drinking water to prevent disease outbreaks
  • Critical medical care for the injured and vulnerable

The coming hours and days are crucial for saving lives and helping survivors rebuild. Every contribution, no matter how small, makes a difference.

Stand with the flood affected residents of Uttarkashi in this hour of crisis—your generosity brings hope when it’s needed most.

We are pleased to provide you with an account of the work carried out by our partner NGO ActionAid Association during the Uttarkarshi floods.

Relief and impact

In response to the devastating cloudburst and flash floods in Uttarkashi on August 5, 2025, ActionAid conducted rapid assessments in the most affected villages. The NGO targeted 200 of the most marginalised and vulnerable families in villages like Dharali, Harsil, Bagori, and Dunda. Among the beneficiaries were:

  • 61 single women
  • 8 persons with disabilities (PwDs)
  • 131 individuals from migrant and tribal communities

The intervention provided immediate assistance, ensuring these families had access to essential supplies during the most critical period following the disaster.

Breakdown of relief kits distributed

Each relief kit was designed to support a family's nutritional, hygiene, and basic needs for one month. The contents of each kit included:

Nutritional Support:

  • Basmati Rice (10kg bag)
  • Sugar (1Kg)
  • Tea (250gm)
  • Dal Arhar (1kg)
  • Dal Moong/Malka (1kg)
  • Rajma (1kg)
  • Mustard Oil (750gm)

  • Sanitary Pads (Stayfree XXL, 20pc packets)
  • Toothpaste (100gm)

These kits were crucial in preventing hunger, protecting health by mitigating the risk of water-borne diseases, and preserving the dignity of women and girls during the time of crisis.

Outcomes achieved:

  • 200 families received the immediate ration and hygiene support
  • The most vulnerable groups were prioritised, ensuring equitable aid distribution.
  • Families regained access to food, hygiene supplies, and a sense of normalcy.
