Urgent: Migrant workers affected by the West Asia war need our help

The haunting images of the COVID-19 migrant worker crisis return to haunt us once again, as thousands of migrant labourers across India are once more scrambling desperately towards their villages and this time not because of a virus, but because of a war raging thousands of kilometres away in West Asia. Industries in Rajasthan, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu and several other states have ground to a halt due to severe shortages of gas and raw materials, leaving workers jobless and struggling to survive.

Dry Ration Kits 

A family of five cannot wait for policy changes. They need rice, dal, oil, spices, sugar, tea, right now. ActionAid’s dry ration kit is designed for one full month of basic nutrition.

Education Support

When a family is hungry, children are pulled from school. ActionAid is providing fee support, learning materials and re‑enrolment facilitation to prevent child labour and dropouts.

“Across cities like Chennai or Mumbai many of the small food stalls which are being run by the street vendors have also been affected and these are the ones in fact who provide cheaper food to the working class, and to the migrant workers again affecting their economics,” says  Dipali Sharma. ActionAid already has teams in Kerala, Odisha, Rajasthan, UP, Delhi, Tamil Nadu and West Bengal. They know which streets, which factory lines, which temporary shelters. They just need the resources.

We cannot stop the war in West Asia. But we can stop a family in Firozabad, Jaipur, Delhi or Sambalpur from going to bed hungry.

These are not refugees from another country. These are our own people, construction workers, plumbers, glass cutters, mineral loaders, small eatery staff. They lost wages, then lost meals. Now their children are missing school. Please donate generously.
