Story
- The Covid-19 lockdown forced migrants to return to their home villages. They suddenly found themselves with no income and simultaneously putting extra pressure on their families already meagre income. Many migrants now face an uncertain future as they are unable to find work in their home villages.
- Seva Mandir is implementing a comprehensive long-term livelihood strategy to enable migrants find livelihood opportunities in or closer to their village, through already established Community Institutions and Self-Help Groups (SHG). These families will be linked with the livelihood activities.
- Long-term livelihood support is vital to improve the lives of locals and migrants both a means of supporting their families. The intervention also address the pre-existing issues faced by families in this region.
- Natural farming practices will be followed in this project. This system reduces the cost of cultivation, substantially increases yield, protects the soil productivity and is environment friendly.
- On site demonstration of the practices of seed treatment, irrigation method and preparation of bio pesticides will ease its adoption.
- Specific support includes: provision of seeds, technical and marketing training, farming tools and market linkages. Families will contribute labour.
- Vegetables to be grown will include – Okra, Cluster Bean, Bottle Gourd, Ridge Gourd, Bitter Gourd and others as demanded.
- Average income of Rs. 20,000 will be earned in one season.
- Higher food and nutritional security in families -important in this area due to high-rates of malnutrition amongst children.
