Story

According to the National Family Health Survey, 2020, while 15 other

states and UTs have recorded a decline in spousal violence, even before

the pandemic set in, the percentage of married women who reported

facing physical or sexual violence from a spouse had more than doubled

in Karnataka--from 20.6% five years ago to 44.4% in 2019-20.

More than 25% of women surveyed in seven states said they had

experienced domestic violence, (NFHS, 2020).

And what’s even more bothersome is that about 86% women who

experienced violence never sought help, and 77% of the victims did not

even mention the incident(s) to anyone.

During the first four phases of the COVID-19-related lockdown, Indian

women filed more domestic violence complaints than recorded in a similar

period in the last 10 years.

At least 10 Dalit women are raped per day, and their vulnerability to rape

has increased by 44% in the last 10 years, according to a report by the

National Crime Records Bureau of India.
