Talab village in Alwar district in Rajasthan, India, struggles for water security. Agriculture is the only income in this remote region. Lack of water availability means low agricultural productivity, which leads to greater poverty in the region and causes personal suffering, especially to women and children. Small, durable water harvesting structures such as check dams improve groundwater levels, water quality, and community self-reliance over time. With donor support, Sehgal Foundation builds rainwater harvesting structures in dry villages. With the use of existing hand pumps, open wells, and tube wells, water harvested by check dams is used for drinking, agriculture, and domestic purposes. This project will benefit 200 farm households in a once-dry village.

S M Sehgal Foundation is a public, charitable trust registered in India since 1999. Dr Surinder Mohan Sehgal and Edda Sehgal established the Sehgal Family Foundation (now “Sehgal Foundation”) in the United States in 1998, and S M Sehgal Foundation, India in 1999. The mission of the Foundation is to strengthen community-led development initiatives to achieve positive social, economic and environmental change across rural India. Based in Gurgaon, Haryana, Sehgal Foundation works primarily in the remote, semi- arid regions of Haryana and Rajasthan, and in Bihar, and is looking to expand into Telangana and Andhra Pradesh. To date, we have reached nearly 500,000 people in 555 villages.Some of our recognitions include: Best-in-category awards for our contributions to rural water management from FICCI, UNESCO-Water Digest, Bhaskar Foundation and the Government of India (Ministry of Water Resources). Our agriculture project was selected as one of the 30 most innovative projects (out of 300) from around the world and was presented at the 2010 Global Conference on Agriculture, Food Security and Climate Change in The Hague, Netherlands. Our good rural governance program has merited recognition from Rockefeller Foundation, being shortlisted as one of most 100 innovative projects, and in 2015, Justice Namati Prize was accorded for the rural governance initiative under Best Learners Category. Our community radio station, Alfaz-e-Mewat FM 107.8 received Manthan Award, and most recently Sehgal Foundation was awarded with Agriculture Award, in Livelihoods category, by Indian Council of Food and Agriculture.
