Pangolins are the only scaly mammals in the world, with eight species found across Africa and Asia. Among them, the Indian Pangolin (Manis crassicaudata) is one of the species that urgently needs protection. They are rapidly declining globally due to illegal secret killing for their scales and meat. With limited success in captive breeding, it is crucial to safeguard their natural populations and habitats. As pangolins are nocturnal, shy, and solitary creatures leading a secretive life, their ecology, behaviour, and wild population levels remain largely unknown.

Sahyadri Nisarga Mitra (SNM) and Our Conservation Efforts:

SNM has been actively working on pangolin conservation through various initiatives. In previous years, we undertook:

✅ Trap Camera Surveys – Conducted with the help of villagers to recorded pangolin activity and assessed their current status.

✅ Door-to-Door Survey Programs – Engaged with local communities to spread knowledge about pangolins and their protection.

✅ Field Surveys – Collected scat and documented indirect signs of pangolins to better understood their presence in different areas.

✅ Day-Night Patrolling – Collaborated with local community rangers to monitored and prevented illegal activities.

🚀 School & College Workshops – Interactive sessions to educate students about pangolins and their ecological importance.

🚀 Social Media Campaigns – Digital outreach through engaging content to spread awareness and encourage conservation.

🚀 Nature Walks – Organizing guided nature walks for youngsters to help them learn about the Indian Pangolin’s habitat and ecology.
