I am Hari Nat. I belong to the Nat-Bhat community from Rajasthan which traces its roots to centuries ago where we used to perform as Hamla Maand Singing artists in the royal courts of Maharajas in India on special occasions and festivals. My ancestors were traditional Hamla Maand artists wielding expertise in various forms of performing arts like Hamla Maand Singing, puppetry, acrobatics, music and singing. Performers from our caste used to enthrall audiences in noble courts dedicating ballads to the glory of warriors, the beauty of womenfolk and at weddings, birthdays and family rituals.
I learnt puppetry from my forefathers and we used to sing folk music while performing the art of puppetry. During these puppetry performances I realised that music had to become the mainstay of my career in performing arts. It was this decision that led me to learn the nuances of vocal music through the eminent Indian singer Smt. Shubha Mudgal who was my Guru in the early years of my career.
Music is not just my passion but is an infinite jouney into my own self. I love to share the beauty of rhythm and notes with the outside world while simultaneously enhancing my spiritual experience through music.
I was born in Rajasthan in 1978 and spent my initial years in the state before coming to Delhi at the age of ten. I started singing at the age of ten and used to perform along my father at various shows. Though I have a rich understanding and background in traditional folk music, I decided to expand my musical borders into western music as well as Ghazals and music from the era of Mohammad Rafi, Ghulam Ali, Jagjit Singh, etc. I come from humble begginings and expanding my limits beyond traditional folk music was a choice to make ends meet and ensure survival in the context of declining demand of traditional music in the industrialised world and market economy.
I have performed in countries like Dubai and France apart from numerous cities in India at the invitation of educational institutes, non-governmental organisations and at many parties. I have also performed with Gypsy artists from France in Delhi where we blended folk and western classical into an enthralling fusion. I have performed at various embassies and the India Habitat Centre in Delhi.
