Women Livelihood Promotion towards Sustainable Development

Now the ISM is applying for the grant request to undertake activities among Urban Poor Women in Madurai City. The Madurai City is called as temple city and it is the destination in Southern districts of Tamil Nadu with the population of informal workers engaged in various occupations. The informal women workers are Domestic workers, Washer People, Rag Pickers, cremation workers, Catering workers, Tiny Industry Workers, Construction supportive works, adolescents, young women and floating population involved in micro enterprises and small vending business. They are facing various exploitation and indecent work situation and negotiation as labouers no legal protection non fulfillment of social security measures and lacking of basic amenities in their dwelling places and to address their issues and bringing changes in their life. 

           ISM is working among the workers at grass root as they are socially, economically, culturally and politically oppressed and facing problems at sectoral level and women workers are facing specific gender issues which needs to be addressed to bring positional and conditional change for men and women workers.

           The target people of ISM are exploited by way of getting low wage and working for long hours and their labour is not recognized and they are not enjoying the status of labours and legal protection. There is no specific law or enactment to protect their labour rights and human rights. These grass root women workers victims of prevailing social structure, denial of rights and privileges, marginalization from the main stream of national life by dominant class and communities.

To address their rights as workers, their appalling life situation, violation of their human rights, bringing legal enactment there is need for promotion of workers movement at different levels.

ISM will play as the main facilitator in creating and sustaining the grass root workers organization (Union)

ISM plan to facilitate for the workers towards access to Social Security Measures Entitlements and availing of government Welfare Schemes.

• The main strategy is to promote and strength the grass root and apex level workers organizations.
• The sector based organizations will be empowered to identify the issues, prioritise them and work towards seeking solutions.
• Promote solidarity and Network building for social action. Lobby and advocacy with government for benefit of unorganized workers.
• To bring policy level changes, amendment in the legal system and enactment of new laws.
• To organize conference and public events.
• To extend legal aid.
• To conduct training and issue based consultation and campaigning.
• To extend and get solidarity with likeminded organization, networks and movements.
• The project facilitate workers movement to protect and promote their rights as human rights and empower them to take responsibilities to bring about structural and functional changes required in the mainstream social system.

• Through ISM continuous work on union and movement activities the women workers have proved to find ways to win the situation and assured to take higher steps in union and started for participatory development.
• Women created economical independency through their enhancement of daily income and regular employment.
• Women could able to own their business and direct intervention of Marketing for their products.
• Women relived from money lenders Usurious interest.
• Women participate in decision making at family and community.
• Women could send girl children for higher education.
• Women could able to create asset like housing, livestock and livelihood resources.
