“The only thing that stands between an orphaned or abandoned child in India and the threat of violence, sexual assault and dangers of street life are Child Care Institutions (CCIs). But even these are grossly under-funded and struggling for basics like rental expenses, nutrition for children, etc.” says Mekha T, co-founder, Guardian of Dreams, a non-profit organisation that has been supporting orphanages, children’s homes and shelters to improve the life of children in need of protection and care.

Lack of funds: Major obstacle for orphanages

With over two crore children classified as orphans in the country, CCIs have been crucial in providing food, shelter and education to such children. But in the absence of adequate and consistent funding support, many CCIs are failing to provide the needs of the children.

“Unfortunately this sector is the most neglected and highly under-resourced. So much so that the lack of funding can cripple a home's abilities to provide better quality care to their children. If we can get better funding, we can provide children a bed to sleep on rather than letting them sleep on the floor. Funding can significantly improve the quality of education that these children receive and the kind of schools they attend. We can enable CCIs in increasing the number of skilled caregivers, thus significantly improving the quality of upbringing these children have,” co-founder of the nonprofit says. 

According to Mekha, a majority of child care homes are struggling to provide quality care. A lot of them are run by very well intentioned local small NGOs who have limited access to resources. As a result of this is that there are a lot of kids who need the support but keep struggling.

The NGO works in multiple dimensions to improve the quality of care like regular health care check ups, counselling support, nutrition, etc. The NGO has also works to improve the quality of education for kids through after school tutoring, guiding and mentoring.
