For a mother who has spent her entire life loving and raising her child, being beaten and mercilessly thrown out onto the streets by her own son is too heartbreaking to overcome. But this is a common story among the elderly residents of the Guru Vishram Vridh Ashram. “I’ve seen mothers in old and torn clothes, their bodies smelling and their hands and feet rotting and covered in maggots,” shares Dr. G.P. Bhagat, founder of the ashram. These abandoned elderly men and women lay starving on the streets hoping for someone to rescue them from their suffering. The Guru Vishram Vridh Ashram has a dedicated rescue team that saves the elderly from the streets and gives them immediate medical care upon their arrival at the home. To tend to the multiple health complications of the seniors, the home has a medical facility with doctors and nurses, a physiotherapy unit, a pathology lab, a digital X-ray monitoring machine and a pharmacy to provide 24-hour care to older adults anytime they require assistance, even during emergencies. Needy Heart Foundation is an NGO set up to help needy poor patients with Cardiac surgeries and support. This foundation is managed by a group of dedicated cardiac doctors and prominent citizens from different walks of life. These like-minded professionals have enabled over 10,000 almost free heart surgeries in the last nineteen years. Needy Heart Foundation has a dream to give every needy person suffering from heart disease a chance to a full and healthy life. This Foundation has been established for the sole purpose of reaching out to the poor and weaker sections of society, irrespective of nationality, religion, colour, caste or creed, who have not been able to reap the benefits of modern advances in medical care. Whilst most of the patients came from different parts of Karnataka, some of the patients came from as far as Bangladesh, West Bengal, MP, Maharashtra, Kerala, Tamilnadu, Andhra Pradesh etc. NHF has arrived at an understanding with certain Heart Surgeons who do not charge operation fees for the surgery of such poor patients as well as certain leading Hospitals who have agreed to minimalist surgery fees. The Foundation sends the patients only to those Hospitals which offer most economical Heart Surgery Packages in Bangalore. The selection of the patients is mostly through cardiac camps conducted in rural areas without bias.Needy Heart Foundation is giving a fresh lease of life to children and some adults who are breadwinners for their families. Day in day out, at the Partner hospitals, one can see glowing faces of the operated children along with their parents or guardians. One of the major achievements of the Foundation has been to create complete transparency of the use of donations received. It ensures that every Rupee received by way of donations is utilized effectively. While metro cities like Bangalore boast of having world-class hospitals at internationally competitive prices, these out of reach of 90% of our population without outside support.</li><li> Needy Heart Foundation (NHF) was established to help such people. The majority of our target patients are not covered by any social health schemes. </li><li>To achieve this objective, NHF has signed MOUs with all the major cardiac Hospitals in Bangalore, like Fortis, Jayadeva, Manipal, Narayana Hrudayalaya, Columbia Asia, Mahaveer Jain, Ramaiah, B G S Global  Hospitals for heart surgeries to be done at highly subsidized rates for the needy poor heart patients.</li><li>NHF has so far saved over ten thousand precious lives. Financial support from Individuals, Non-Govt Organizations, or Corporates, will greatly support our efforts to give this gift of life to many more of the needy poor of our society.</li></ul> 
 <ul><li>Subsidized rate per patient agreed with some Hospitals is Rs 1.5 Lakhs per patient against the normal charges of about Rs 4 lakhs. </li><li>NHF has worked out a model, where Individuals, NGOs or Corporates will contribute Rs 35,000 per patient against the needed Rs 1.5 Lakhs. The balance will be organized by NHF with the help of social working cells of various Hospitals </li><li>NHF is looking to help at least 200 patients with GiveIndia support this year. This amounts to raising Rs. 70,0,000 via the Give India platform. </li></ul> 
 <ul><li>We at NHF have a dream to give every person suffering from heart disease, a chance to live a healthy life irrespective of caste, creed, colour, gender, nationality or religion</li><li>Our target this year is to enable at least 500 heart surgeries and give a new lease of life to the cardiac patients whose surgery we support. </li><li>To select the needy patients, NHF supports Heart Awareness Camps conducted by NGOs like Rotary International, Lions, Giants etc. It is our observation that out of a heart awareness Camp involving 200 people, about 5 o critical heart patients who need surgical intervention, are identified.</li><li>Further, every patient has on average five members in his or her family.</li><li>Thus, every year we impact the lives of over 20,000x 5 i.e., about one lakh people.</li></ul>
