“What will happen to them after me? I am 80+. I spend sleepless nights,” worries ex-Air Force officer, Group Captain AC Barua while talking about the future of the 28 destitute women under his care. “They have nobody in this world, sometimes they don’t remember their own names. They are absolutely alone,” he informs us as he goes from one room to the other meeting all the women who live at Seneh, the only home where they are loved and taken care of. After fighting for his country all his life, this octogenarian is now fighting to rescue homeless and abandoned women from dying on the streets. But he cannot do it alone. “Everyday I keep on getting calls from here and there. ‘Oh! there’s a woman lying here. Can you help?’ But I don’t dare to go and help because I don’t have the money. I don’t have the resources, our resources are very limited,” explains Gr. Capt. Many times these are women with mental health conditions and considered being a witch due to superstitious beliefs and beaten up as a result. They are victims of domestic abuse or widow mothers who are considered to be a burden on the family. Group Captain Barua has not only rescued them from critical conditions, he has provided them with urgent medical care, food and above all, a free safe shelter where they can live with love and care. Among these residents is Sarala Kalita who fled to save herself from the tortures of her alcoholic husband only to face neglect and trauma from her brothers- and sisters-in-law. “Both my brothers and their wives urged my father to leave me somewhere as they didn’t want to take care of me anymore. One day my brother’s wife didn’t even let me have food at home. She just wanted me to leave and go away. So that’s why, my father got in touch with Seneh through someone, and handed me over to Sir to take care of me,” says Sarita who has found joy in living at Seneh. “Coming to Seneh, it felt like I got a new life altogether. Sir has given me a harmonium. I love singing. It makes me forget everything and takes me to someplace else entirely,” she adds. More women like Sarala can find their way to a loving home like Seneh. All they need is a little bit of your kindness. “It is difficult to make both ends meet”To sustain their daily expenditure, Capt Barua needs approx ₹3 lakh a month and arranging the funds is a mammoth challenge for the NGO. “Our expenses are growing day by day. Residents are growing older, their sicknesses are increasing. At times we have to give them special food. They require more care so we have to get more employees. About half of them require leading around, 1-2 has to be fed also. Women are often encouraged and made to believe that they should disregard technology, often attributing phrases like “it’s too complicated” or “it’s a man’s domain”. It is irrelevant if she chooses technology as an academic pursuit or as a career or even as a field of specialization. Being aware of the technological advancements and developments is as much a necessity to her as knowing her rights and privileges. Through technology, women can achieve emancipation and the true essence of empowerment. It is with this belief that Feminist Approach to Technology (FAT) was founded in 2007 with a few volunteers in New Delhi, India. FAT was formally registered in 2008. Today, the “FAT model” has become popular as girl leaders emerging through it are visible in local and national forums. A strong network of girl leaders is emerging at a community level fighting not just for their own rights, but also challenging gender discriminatory practices like child marriage, early and forced marriage, and violence against girls in their local communities. Considering the scarcity of jobs in India, in general graduates of our programs have broken the glass ceiling within their communities and carved a path for themselves. Similar results in all locations we have scaled our programs so far have re-established our conviction that the girl-led model is key for the effectiveness of our model.Our Vision: Every girl reclaims her right to STEM and uses it to drive collective leadership to build sustainable communities.Our Mission: To build collective leadership of girls so they can use technical tools, STEM innovation, and feminist awareness, to bring sustainable change in their lives and communities.

The lockdowns showed us how crucial digital access was. But when COVID-19 first hit, only 33% of women in urban India and 28% in rural India even had access to the internet (IAMAI). But access to technology continues to be a luxury for most girls and women, who are still fighting for their right to a life of dignity, to safety within their own homes and schools, to good healthcare. India surges ahead in its Digital Revolution, but women are being left behind! How can we hope to bridge the gap? And how can women at the community-level lead change? 
 In line with the UN International Women's Day 2023 theme of "DigitALL: Innovation and technology for gender equality," Mindshare is collaborating with Feminist Approach to Technology (FAT), a young women-led nonprofit working towards bridging the gender gap in technology access and STEM education for marginalized adolescent girls in India. Mindshare is a media services company that is committed to empowering more women through our work. Mindshare's values of energy, empathy, and impact drive us to accelerate Good Growth for our clients in a world of constant transformation, while also contributing to the betterment of society and the world. Our mission is to support FAT in empowering more young women leaders in India. To achieve this, we're planning to raise S$10,000 between March and May, 2023 
 The funds raised will go towards building a Community Tech Centre where 14 to 18-year-old girls can gain their first exposure to computers and phones and learn digital skills while also learning about their rights and gender justice. With this support, girls and women in FAT's program locations can participate in the using, making, and creating of technology, with the goal of achieving gender equality!

DigitALL: A Tech Centre for Marginalised Girls & Women

There is a huge digital divide between boys and girls when it comes to accessing and using technology. According to UNICEF, one-third of the girl's population in India today are facing a challenge in staying connected with the use of digital devices. They also lose out on jobs and livelihood because they do not know how to use computers, tablets, mobile applications etc. This is because even today in India, girls and boys are not provided equal opportunities - whether in education, in making choices and decisions for themselves or being gainfully employed- trapping them in the cycle of neglect, early and forced marriage, violence, poor Sexual and Reproductive health, and unequal domestic responsibilities. They are often unable to break out due to a lack of education, mobility, resources, and support systems.  Now with the changes that the Covid-19 pandemic has brought in, digital literacy and tools have become important to access education as well. The huge gender gap in digital access in India poses a high chance of girls dropping out of education and getting caught in the cycle of poverty and discrimination. 
 We at Feminist Approach to Technology (FAT) believe that the most effective way to advance gender equality is by investing in girls and young women’s feminist leadership so that they can come together to solve their own problems and work towards sustainable change within their community. A movement for girls’ leadership can be built only when individual girl (and young women) leaders emerge. And in the 21st century, effective leadership requires both new-age technical skills and STEM awareness. Hence we work with girls and young women to build their individual and collective leadership intertwining feminist awareness with STEM skill-building. With our 2 programs, i.e. Young Women’s Leadership Program (YWLP), we support the leadership journey of girls from an early age starting from personal agency development to building collective voice against gender oppression and through the Girls in STEM (GiSTEM) Program we work towards bridging the gender gap in technology and STEM by promoting non-traditional education and livelihoods for girls. Now we are making Young Women Leaders to take over the implementation of our key programs in the form of a decentralised network of young women-led collectives running Community Tech Centers, Community Jugaad Labs and Community Peer Support Groups.  
 Through this project, we will support the leadership journey of girls who have already created their personal agency, developed a collective voice against gender oppression with a multi-year FAT’s engagement in the past. Now, these Young Women Leaders are being trained to operate the local centers in their communities for new girls. Wherein, FAT’s curriculum of Gender and Technology, STEM and Gender Equality will be provided through them.  Over the last decade, FAT has empowered more than 1300 girls to take control of their own life decisions in the communities we work in (Delhi; Pune; Giridih, Jharkhand; Patna and Buxar, Bihar. Girls trained by FAT have broken gender norms of child/forced marriage, education and livelihood within their families. Most have also crossed the glass ceiling of higher education and careers within their communities, including 6 girls who have started their journey in STEM careers.  You can help these passionate young women leaders acquire the skill to run Collectives in their communities and empower more young girls.
