For a mother who has spent her entire life loving and raising her child, being beaten and mercilessly thrown out onto the streets by her own son is too heartbreaking to overcome. But this is a common story among the elderly residents of the Guru Vishram Vridh Ashram. “I’ve seen mothers in old and torn clothes, their bodies smelling and their hands and feet rotting and covered in maggots,” shares Dr. G.P. Bhagat, founder of the ashram. These abandoned elderly men and women lay starving on the streets hoping for someone to rescue them from their suffering. If the children don’t relent even then, the abusers put chilli powder so that children will say “yes” because of the burning of the skin… There are teeth marks on their bodies, and their vaginal parts are burnt. When children stay in these conditions, it is painful even to hear,” says Lalitha SA of the Society for Participatory Integrated Development (SPID), while talking about many heart-rending stories of trafficked children in red-light areas. In over three decades, the team of SPID led by Lalitha, has saved over 3000 children from the red-light areas in Delhi, such as GB Road, and many from clutches of sex trafficking. The issue of sanitary waste caused by single-use menstrual products is causing a threat to our natural resources. Based on our conservative estimates, each menstruator generates about 100kgs of sanitary waste in their lifetime (considering a 30-year menstrual period). A recent study has found that 113,000 tonnes (11.3 crore kgs) of waste from sanitary napkins reaches Indian landfills each year.Understanding the issue has led us to research and develop a comprehensive module to address the sustainable aspect of menstrual health and hygiene. We aim to cover the topic through a socio-biological lens along with addressing the health and environmental implications of our choices. We will also provide sustainable menstrual kits to menstruators (adolescent girls and women and/or transgenders) from low-income communities. In 2022, we aim to train more than 1,000 menstruators and provide kits to at least 1,000 menstruators from low-income communities. We have trained 465 women so far and distributed cloth pads to 100 women from low-income communities.With 1000 menstruators trained, we shall be able to prevent around 3300 kgs of sanitary waste from reaching the landfill in a period of 1 year. Even if we account for the waste generated via a shift to cloth pads, the net reduction in waste prevented from getting into landfills will be 2700kgs in 1 year. For a 3-year usage period of cloth pads, we can prevent 8100kgs from getting into landfills. Nature is losing its colours due to human actions and we are amid a Climate Crisis. Natural ecosystems are under threat and human survival is dependent on it.We create engaging, hands-on, practical environmental learning content and deliver it in various formats, one of which is our year-long environmental learning program with 4 modules. In the coming academic year, we want to place volunteers in classrooms where they will implement our modules and engage children in environmental action through our campaign.We are currently implementing the program with 28 classrooms and 1000+ children. This year-long program is the first step to continue sustained community-driven action in communities where we see the scope of further environmental action using community support. We aim to strengthen communities that advocate for a better environment and work towards creating it. Plastics are plaguing our country and it has not left the countryside either. Massive amounts of plastic or lined-paper plates and cups are used in peri-urban areas /villages when they have a wedding or festivities. Almost 1000 people attend any joyous occasion on the day of an event. This means in a single day, waste amounting to 3000 plates, 8000 paper/plastic cups, and 3000 plastic spoons is generated.A family spends about 10-15000 Rupees on just disposable plates and cups, all of which are then left in the beautiful surrounding, to rot. This waste is often burnt thereafter due to improper waste management systems. Disposable plates and cups are almost impossible and often expensive to recycle as they are soiled and contaminated.  The plastic plague can stop if we shift from disposables to reusable. Opting for Reusable items has higher environmental and economic benefits than disposing of disposable items, even if it's done ethically. Garbage Free India (GFI), intends to set up a Crockery Bank in a village in Alibaug to encourage the principle of Reuse, thereby preventing waste from polluting the local surroundings and water bodies.
