For a mother who has spent her entire life loving and raising her child, being beaten and mercilessly thrown out onto the streets by her own son is too heartbreaking to overcome. But this is a common story among the elderly residents of the Guru Vishram Vridh Ashram. “I’ve seen mothers in old and torn clothes, their bodies smelling and their hands and feet rotting and covered in maggots,” shares Dr. G.P. Bhagat, founder of the ashram. These abandoned elderly men and women lay starving on the streets hoping for someone to rescue them from their suffering. Help Dr. Bhagat care for 500+ elderly parents rescued from abuse and homelessness

“What will happen to them after me? I am 80+. I spend sleepless nights,” worries ex-Air Force officer, Group Captain AC Barua while talking about the future of the 28 destitute women under his care. “They have nobody in this world, sometimes they don’t remember their own names. They are absolutely alone,” he informs us as he goes from one room to the other meeting all the women who live at Seneh, the only home where they are loved and taken care of. After fighting for his country all his life, this octogenarian is now fighting to rescue homeless and abandoned women from dying on the streets. But he cannot do it alone. “Everyday I keep on getting calls from here and there. ‘Oh! there’s a woman lying here. Can you help?’ But I don’t dare to go and help because I don’t have the money. I don’t have the resources, our resources are very limited,” explains Gr. Capt. Many times these are women with mental health conditions and considered being a witch due to superstitious beliefs and beaten up as a result. They are victims of domestic abuse or widow mothers who are considered to be a burden on the family. Group Captain Barua has not only rescued them from critical conditions, he has provided them with urgent medical care, food and above all, a free safe shelter where they can live with love and care. Among these residents is Sarala Kalita who fled to save herself from the tortures of her alcoholic husband only to face neglect and trauma from her brothers- and sisters-in-law. “Both my brothers and their wives urged my father to leave me somewhere as they didn’t want to take care of me anymore. One day my brother’s wife didn’t even let me have food at home. She just wanted me to leave and go away. So that’s why, my father got in touch with Seneh through someone, and handed me over to Sir to take care of me,” says Sarita who has found joy in living at Seneh. “Coming to Seneh, it felt like I got a new life altogether. Sir has given me a harmonium. I love singing. It makes me forget everything and takes me to someplace else entirely,” she adds. More women like Sarala can find their way to a loving home like Seneh. All they need is a little bit of your kindness. “It is difficult to make both ends meet”To sustain their daily expenditure, Capt Barua needs approx ₹3 lakh a month and arranging the funds is a mammoth challenge for the NGO. “Our expenses are growing day by day. Residents are growing older, their sicknesses are increasing. At times we have to give them special food. They require more care so we have to get more employees. About half of them require leading around, 1-2 has to be fed also. Lalitha hails from a village in Dindigul district of Tamil Nadu. For four decades she has worked as a weaver and is revered in her village for her intricate work. Though the work pays less, it gives Lalitha and many like her a sense of identity. However, a gradual blurring of her vision overtime started impacting her work, reducing her income and completely shattering her confidence. Lalitha had cataract, a leading cause of blindness and visual impairment in population aged 50 years and above. Availability, accessibility, affordability, and acceptability of eye care services pose as key barriers to eye health. Visual impairment can severely impact the quality of life; limiting one’s ability to learn, earn and participate in society.Cataract surgeries remain one of the worst-hit health services during the COVID-19 induced lockdown, the backlog of persons waiting to be operated has been steadily increasing over the past 15+ months of the pandemic. Fear of infection and fractured transport systems have also kept people away from hospitals. Eye hospitals are also acutely financially strapped due to the substantial reduction in income from paying patients, making care for marginalised communities who are unable to pay for services even more challenging. 
 Driven by the ethos of restoring the gift of vision to every visually impaired human being, Mission for Vision is a leading not-for-profit organisation working since 2000 for the eradication of avoidable blindness. We enable high quality, comprehensive and equitable eye health care in India impacting 800,000 people every year across 144+ districts and 20 states. In these difficult times we are committed to our communities in ensuring that their eye health needs are taken care of. We are stepping up our efforts to increase access to quality cataract surgeries free of cost and save many Lalithas from losing their vision.Immediate visual rehabilitation is possible following cataract surgery, during which the cataract is removed and an intraocular lens (IOL) is inserted, making it possible to prevent 80% of blindness and visual impairment in the country. Our service entails eye screening of communities nearer their homes via camps or vision centres, transportation to the hospital for care, pre-operative procedures, surgery, stay and meals at the hospital (usually two nights) and post-operative care. Surgery will take place at leading eye health centres in the area and services will be rendered by qualified and skilled eye doctors and paramedical staff. These services will be provided at no cost to beneficiaries. Priority will be provided to persons who are older, those with disabilities and to women. 
 Mission for Vision had undertaken a PAN India study to assess the post-surgical and treatment outcomes, not only in terms of visual acuity gains, but also for vision function related quality of life (VFQoL) of patients. Cataract surgery was found to have a transformative impact in reversing blindness and visual acuity gains, in alignment with WHO recommendations. Our data also shows a significant improvement in the Quality of Life of patients post cataract surgery where a large majority of the beneficiaries reported less difficulty in carrying out daily activities, economic activities, in mobility and psycho-social parameters after cataract surgery than before the intervention.Every 1 USD invested in eye care generates an average of 4 USD of economic gain as pointed out by a global study. Supporting blindness elimination stimulates the broader economy-while bringing life changing benefits to individuals and their cares. Gift of Sight

80% of vision loss is preventable. A majority of people lack access or the ability to pay for eye health services. People from low-income backgrounds are affected the most and are more likely to become blind. Thus, blindness and poverty are closely interlinked. The COVID-19 pandemic has added a layer of new challenges, especially due to the fractured transport systems and the fear of visiting large towns and cities that are hot-spots of the infection.Some of these eye conditions can be easily corrected with a pair of spectacles. This may not appear as a major issue for those who can afford these services, but what about those who cannot?  
 Our Mission Jyot programme is aimed at establishing Vision Centres (VC) in remote parts of the country and encouraging people to seek care earlier, therefore preventing vision problems from worsening and enabling people to reintegrate into the workforce quicker. These VCs are focused towards serving the socio-economically challenged communities and offer quality services by trained optometrists at affordable rates.Amid the COVID-19 pandemic, our Mission Jyot’s “Vision Centre” approach has been found to be uniquely effective and relevant. During the local lockdowns and restrictions due to the pandemic, communities served by VCs had a continuous source of eye health care and were not bereft of services. 
 Investing in eye health contributes largely towards the sustained growth and development of nations and has the potential to bring about transformative social change. Through the Vision Centres established by Mission for Vision, we aim to provide comprehensive eye screening, counselling, referrals and follow-up services for financially-challenged communities. A donation of INR 5000 will facilitate eye examinations for 100 individuals (INR 50 per person). Along with the easy access to eye care services, the other important gains will be of improved productivity, better mental health, reduced dependency on others and better quality of life.

Mission Jyot - Comprehensive Eye Care For All

Community Health Workers (CHW) play a crucial role in the effective delivery of healthcare services to the remotest corners of the country. Their strong relationship with the local communities bridges the gap helps immensely in eliminating any social barriers. These frontline agents of change play a critical role in creating greater awareness about eye-health issues among the community; counseling and guiding patients; and increasing the footfall to the Vision Centres established by Mission for Vision. 
 Under the Mission Jyot umbrella, Mission for Vision establishes Vision Centres in underserved parts of the country. Every Vision Centre employs one or two Community Health Workers (CHWs) from the adjacent villages and most CHWs come from socio-economically challenged backgrounds. The CHWs hired by Mission for Vision undergo intense training in the hospital for six days and get further training in the field for four days. They are trained in basic eye care: screening, assessing and recording vision, identifying common eye diseases, referral, documentation, creating awareness about eye diseases, hospital or Vision Centre services and follow up with patients, etc. 
 To ensure sustained delivery of services, it is important that every trained CHW continues their employment at the Vision Centre for a longer period of time. Apart from a safe and engaging working environment, CHWs can be retained by providing them a salary that is on par with industry standards. The cost per month is about INR 10,000 per CHW and this includes their local travel to nearby villages.
