The extent of the struggles here was beyond my imagination. These children have certified disabilities which have been diagnosed by psychiatrists and the medical fraternity. These are the children who often develop behavioural manifestations of underlying problems which lead to anti-social issues. Such children with learning disabilities have to be supported by specialists otherwise the learning gaps increase and they are forced to drop out of the main stream education. This leads to social disorder and loss of opportunities both to the child and the society. weCan works to channelize these kids towards academic goals and ensure they remain a part of the main stream education. This is done by use of strategies and therapies to deliver the mainstream curriculum. weCan tries to support as many underprivileged children as possible, regardless of financial barriers. The day care shelters run by Calcutta Social Project, Kolkata (An NGO looking after street children) are safe places for street children to spend the day while their parents may be away at work. They are clean places where the kids can eat, bathe and spend the day safely. These are children from violent and emotionally disturbed homes with obvious behavioural issues. They frequently have been physically abused, are prone to antisocial activities.
