“We received a distress call saying that a blind girl is being held captive by a woman and is being forced to beg. Our volunteers were able to rescue that girl and bring her to the Blind Welfare Society home for girls. We cared for her and educated her. Today that girl is a senior government official”, says Asha Bhola, President, Blind Welfare Society (BWS) as she recalls how her organisation has been able to transform lives.BWS has been a ray of hope for 40 such blind girls, many of whom have been abandoned by their families owing to their visual impairment. Tamil Nadu Dwarfism Welfare Association” was established in 2018 with a mission to support and uplift individuals with disabilities across the state. Since its inception, society has been dedicated to providing a range of essential services and resources to differently-abled individuals. Through the generous contributions of donors, the society has been able to distribute educational scholarships, trolleys, wheelchairs, crutches, sewing machines, as well as necessities such as rice, pulses, and grocery items to those in need.In 2023, building on the success and experience gained from the welfare society, the Tamil Nadu Stature People with Disabilities Association was formally registered. This new association was created to further enhance the support for people with disabilities and to ensure that they receive the recognition and assistance they deserve. The association has also obtained an 80G certification, allowing for tax-exempt donations, and has established a bank account to facilitate financial transactions and donationsThe welfare society and the newly formed association are committed to continuing their work to improve the lives of differently-abled individuals in Tamil Nadu, providing them with the tools and support they need to lead dignified and independent lives.
