Help Disabled Children with Shelter & Care

For a mother who has spent her entire life loving and raising her child, being beaten and mercilessly thrown out onto the streets by her own son is too heartbreaking to overcome. But this is a common story among the elderly residents of the Guru Vishram Vridh Ashram. “I’ve seen mothers in old and torn clothes, their bodies smelling and their hands and feet rotting and covered in maggots,” shares Dr. G.P. Bhagat, founder of the ashram. These abandoned elderly men and women lay starving on the streets hoping for someone to rescue them from their suffering. But most people walk past them without a second glance. “Like this”, Dr. Bhagat explains, “many elders die on the roads.”Since 2003, SHEOWS (Saint Hardyal Educational and Orphans Welfare Society) has rescued over 10,000 elderly people from the streets and given them a home with care and support. The Guru Vishram Vridh Ashram has a dedicated rescue team that saves the elderly from the streets and gives them immediate medical care upon their arrival at the home. To tend to the multiple health complications of the seniors, the home has a medical facility with doctors and nurses, a physiotherapy unit, a pathology lab, a digital X-ray monitoring machine and a pharmacy to provide 24-hour care to older adults anytime they require assistance, even during emergencies. Dr. Bhagat prioritizes the health of the seniors and ensures that they receive three balanced meals a day based on their precise health requirements. Need for the fundraiserThe humanitarian mission of SHEOWS is making an impact in the area, as more and more people are being rescued and brought to Guru Vishram Vridh Ashram. To meet the financial costs of running the home, SHEOWS needs support to continue providing the residents with all the facilities that they need. “We received a distress call saying that a blind girl is being held captive by a woman and is being forced to beg. Our volunteers were able to rescue that girl and bring her to the Blind Welfare Society home for girls. We cared for her and educated her. Today that girl is a senior government official”, says Asha Bhola, President, Blind Welfare Society (BWS) as she recalls how her organisation has been able to transform lives.BWS has been a ray of hope for 40 such blind girls, many of whom have been abandoned by their families owing to their visual impairment. Sadly, the care, shelter and education for blind girls come at a cost, and BWS is unable to keep its work going. Livelihood, poverty and disability are very intricately interdependent. Poverty leads todisability and Vice Versa. Dignified, steady and sustainable source of livelihood can, to someextent address this issue paving the way for empowerment.The total population of Persons with Disabilities (PwDs) in Gujarat is 10.92 Lakh, 61% beingin the employable age (18-59 years). Out of these, 35 percent are employed, and 65 percentare unemployed. Wage employment, self-employment through skill development, vocationaltraining, strengthening of traditional sources of livelihood are currently being focused by thedevelopment community. Low level of employment and education level necessary for adecent life are leading towards poverty and marginalization, underdeveloped human resource,loss of output from productive disabled people impacting society and economy at large,especially for women with disabilities.The Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act, 2016 has been implemented in the country toascertain a life of dignity for persons with disabilities. The majority of PwDs live in ruralareas and with infringed access to opportunities and resources and the day-in and day-outstruggle for identity takes a toll on their situation. 
 We plan to create and mentor a unique Orchestra run by PWDs with flair for music andsinging. A group of 11 PwDs with basic skills in the same - called BANDISH –- has alreadybeen created and has been supported by basic training and opportunity for performances byAatapi since past one year. They have performed in several functions organised by theFoundation and also made their presence felt on social media through uploading their videoof the National Song on occasion of Independence Day, 2020.Capacity building of persons with disabilities, access to opportunities is now critical to refineand upscale up their skills a notch and increase the scope of their performances. Due torestrictions imposed by the COVID-19 pandemic, where live performances have beenrestricted to a large extent, we plan to build their capacities not only in music/instrumentalskills but also in using the online platforms for marketing and reaching to a wider audience.We also need to build their entrepreneur skills to manage a group and become self reliant. 
 We hope to create a role model for self sufficiency of Persons with Disability. Many PwDs have a natural flair for music. In case thisexperiment is successful, it will provide an incentive to others to try and develop similar capacities and develop their own teams. Forothers, it will provide a hope and ambition to try their hand at entrepreneurship.

Bandish – Musical Journey towards Empowerment for Persons with Disability

The Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act, 2016 has been implemented in the country to ascertain a life of dignity for persons with disabilities. The majority of PwDs live in rural areas and with infringed access to opportunities and resources and the day-in and day-out struggle for identity takes a toll on their situation.Livelihood, poverty and disability are very intricately interdependent.  Aatapi Seva Foundation initiated its intervention with persons with disabilities in 2008-2009 when in Baseline survey of 4 villages of Jambusar block, 206 PWD were identified and it was revealed that they were deprived of basic identity and rights and entitlements which extended from 13 to 45 villages.AATAPI engages with PwD to create awareness about their rights and entitlements, government Schemes, laws related to them and nurture leaders amongst PwD to be a bridge between village and district agencies for accessing entitlements. Block level Taluka Sangathan – Viklang Parivartan Sangathan, has created a platform for them to take leadership in voicing out their needs to the state level.Capacity building of persons with disabilities, access to opportunities for livelihood is critical. AATAPI supports through nurturing small businesses, entrepreneurship skills, job linkages, skills training, apart from strengthening of traditional sources of income – agriculture and animal husbandry. With the help of the district administration of Bharuch, the initiative is taken to create livelihood opportunities for women with disabilities. In this livelihood opportunities based on their context and realities with technological support are envisaged. One such intervention is &quot;UNNATI PATH&quot;- a tea stall run by women with disabilities at the Mamlatdar office which will provide value-added services to its customers, such as home delivery of hot snacks, etc. 
 Apart from the overall improvement in access to rights and entitlements among persons with disabilities in the block, PwDs with respect to livelihood and economic development engaged in the strengthening of traditional sources of livelihood- animal husbandry and agriculture, initiating small businesses and seeking learning opportunities for skill development. 90 such men and women are now engaged meaningfully in economic activities.At all platforms, village, block and district level, PwDs are voicing their issues. There are now models of change among PwDs who are a source of inspiration for fellow citizens.

Garima - Empowering Persons with Disabilities through Livelihood Enhancement

Women farmers constitute almost 79% of all women workforce. Land ownership by women (&lt;13%) is restricted largely to small and marginal land holding, reflecting the poorer social and economic status of women in agriculture. (Census, 2011)Poorer socio-economic standing exposes women farmers to more laborious farming tasks - sowing, transplantation, weeding, harvesting, thrashing, willowing, post-harvest work, &amp; value addition activities. There is little or no access to improved tools and technology, tools meant for drudgery reduction being designed mainly for men, not universally accessible or used by women. This physical work and drudgery involving bending and squatting for long hours leads to postural health problems like back pain, hand and leg pain, shoulder pain, injury, cut wounds, respiratory diseases, &amp; reproductive health problems like heavy bleeding, infections, and miscarriages. Drudgery also leads to less time for seeking health and nutrition services for self and family.The COVID-19 pandemic has brought with it not only health implications but also economic implications due to restrictions and lockdowns, with loss of jobs and income generation avenues. As women bear the brunt of all social and economic emergencies, it is imperative to develop models for income generation, better health and social standing.  As women farmers are expected to face both socio-economic and health challenges, there is need to develop a self-sufficient, village-based model to address these issues in a sustainable manner and to provide a platform for local problem solving as well as to promote their economic contribution to families and communities.  
 The present proposal therefore aims to address the problems faced by women farmers by introducing an innovative village-based social enterprise - “Agricultural Tool Bank” - managed by CBOs – i.e. Self Help Groups (SHG) under the ownership of UJAAS. It is expected to not only make drudgery reduction tools accessible to small and marginal women farmers as and when needed, provide relief from farm-related health problems, but also present an income-generating option, increase earning capacities of women farmers, and act as a village-level platform to promote health, nutrition, financial literacy, and entrepreneurship development. To improve health and socio-economic status of women farmers by promoting access to farm mechanization through a sustainable agriculture tool bank is the intent.To establish two CBO owned tool banks for Women Farmers to reduce their drudgery and improve health and socio-economic profile is the major intent and along with that to develop a community based Behaviour Change Communication model for COVID prevention 
 Impact of the project will be visible in following ways:It will improve health and socio economic status of women engaged in farm activities in rural area. It will also create a viable sustainable economic model for women SHGs and other women to replicate. It will create an opportunity for Agricultural Labourers to earn regular income with less drudgery. Not only addressing drudgery and poor income, but the model also aspires to bring the most marginalized under a protective fold of a financial institution. Because of its holistic Approach it will be Addressing health and empowerment through leverage established by a business model
