For a mother who has spent her entire life loving and raising her child, being beaten and mercilessly thrown out onto the streets by her own son is too heartbreaking to overcome. But this is a common story among the elderly residents of the Guru Vishram Vridh Ashram. “I’ve seen mothers in old and torn clothes, their bodies smelling and their hands and feet rotting and covered in maggots,” shares Dr. G.P. Bhagat, founder of the ashram. These abandoned elderly men and women lay starving on the streets hoping for someone to rescue them from their suffering. The Guru Vishram Vridh Ashram has a dedicated rescue team that saves the elderly from the streets and gives them immediate medical care upon their arrival at the home. To tend to the multiple health complications of the seniors, the home has a medical facility with doctors and nurses, a physiotherapy unit, a pathology lab, a digital X-ray monitoring machine and a pharmacy to provide 24-hour care to older adults anytime they require assistance, even during emergencies. “What will happen to them after me? I am 80+. I spend sleepless nights,” worries ex-Air Force officer, Group Captain AC Barua while talking about the future of the 28 destitute women under his care. “They have nobody in this world, sometimes they don’t remember their own names. They are absolutely alone,” he informs us as he goes from one room to the other meeting all the women who live at Seneh, the only home where they are loved and taken care of. After fighting for his country all his life, this octogenarian is now fighting to rescue homeless and abandoned women from dying on the streets. But he cannot do it alone. “Everyday I keep on getting calls from here and there. ‘Oh! there’s a woman lying here. Can you help?’ But I don’t dare to go and help because I don’t have the money. I don’t have the resources, our resources are very limited,” explains Gr. Capt. Many times these are women with mental health conditions and considered being a witch due to superstitious beliefs and beaten up as a result. They are victims of domestic abuse or widow mothers who are considered to be a burden on the family. Group Captain Barua has not only rescued them from critical conditions, he has provided them with urgent medical care, food and above all, a free safe shelter where they can live with love and care. Among these residents is Sarala Kalita who fled to save herself from the tortures of her alcoholic husband only to face neglect and trauma from her brothers- and sisters-in-law. “Both my brothers and their wives urged my father to leave me somewhere as they didn’t want to take care of me anymore. One day my brother’s wife didn’t even let me have food at home. She just wanted me to leave and go away. So that’s why, my father got in touch with Seneh through someone, and handed me over to Sir to take care of me,” says Sarita who has found joy in living at Seneh. “Coming to Seneh, it felt like I got a new life altogether. Sir has given me a harmonium. I love singing. It makes me forget everything and takes me to someplace else entirely,” she adds. More women like Sarala can find their way to a loving home like Seneh. All they need is a little bit of your kindness. “It is difficult to make both ends meet”To sustain their daily expenditure, Capt Barua needs approx ₹3 lakh a month and arranging the funds is a mammoth challenge for the NGO. “Our expenses are growing day by day. Residents are growing older, their sicknesses are increasing. At times we have to give them special food. They require more care so we have to get more employees. About half of them require leading around, 1-2 has to be fed also. At Action Against Hunger, we drive change from the ground up, to make this world free from hunger. Since inception in 1979, we have led the global fight against hunger. Our work has impacted the lives of 15 million individuals, through a network of 7100 humanitarian professionals across 55 countries. In India, our operations from the grassroots upwards, are focused on taking decisive action against the causes and effects of malnutrition. We equip people with knowledge and awareness, so they can see their children grow up strong, and for whole communities to prosper. In India, we are one of the few NGOs focusing specifically on child malnutrition with various nutrition sensitive and nutrition specific interventions. Our teams work with some of India’s most vulnerable communities, living in inaccessible geographies, detecting and treating malnutrition in children, and empowering mothers and families on how to prevent it. Our multidisciplinary programs tackle malnutrition across four states of Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Rajasthan and Gujarat covering 1266 Rural and Tribal villages and 160 Anganwadi centres in urban slums.  Our work spans across three broad pillars –·        Treatment – While strengthening the early identification of malnutrition in the communities we provide home-based treatment to children suffering from moderate acute malnutrition (MAM) and ensure treatment for children with severe acute malnutrition (SAM) at the nearest Nutrition Rehabilitation Centres (NRC). With follow-up and counseling at community and facility level we ensure adherence to treatment, early recovery, and prevention of relapse.·        Prevention – We educate mothers, families, and communities on improving nutrition of mothers and their children, recognizing the causes and symptoms of malnutrition, and taking actions to prevent it. We build their capacity for sustaining the achieved behavior change. We also provide access to nutrition-sensitive interventions such as WASH and Food Security and Livelihood in order to effectively prevent malnutrition. Awareness generation and ensuring the community’s access to various health and nutrition related government schemes is one of the core areas of our work.·        Sustainability – All the programs are implemented in close collaboration with the local governments and other actors of the grassroot health and nutrition ecosystem. We build capacity of Anganwadi and ASHA workers, and Panchayati Raj Institute (PRI) members on identifying the early signs of malnutrition, taking corrective actions and ensuring enabling environment for better nutrition of the children and mothers. For this, we also advocate at the District and State level to build a responsive policy and administrative support.We work on all these pillars through our comprehensive ‘1000 Days Plus’ approach and a community-centric designing of the programs. Our meticulously planned and technology-enabled Formative Research and Baseline, Midline, and End-line evaluations provide us objective parameters to assess the root causes of the problem, its magnitude, and measure our impact.

India carries a huge burden of malnutrition with about 1.08 million children dying even before their fifth birthday. The underlying cause of these deaths is acute malnutrition as children suffering from low immunity are unable to fight even the smallest of infections. Seven million children each year are born with a weight of less than 2.5kg, which is strongly linked to the nutritional status of women: 33 % of married women from 15 to 49 years of age are too thin for their height and 55% of the same group has some form of anaemia.  This is a massive challenge to India’s economic growth and development and requires immediate attention. 
 The first 1000 days of a child’s life (from pregnancy until their second birthday) have a profound impact on the ability to grow, learn and thrive – and a lasting effect on a community’s health and prosperity. This provides us with a unique opportunity to improve their nutritional status and build happier and healthier futures. The program will focus on this approach of the first 1000 days of life where pregnant and lactating women and children up to two years of age will be supported through government and social platforms. It will include the delivery of ongoing and integrated health care and nutrition services for women and children throughout the life cycle from pre-pregnancy through childbirth, the immediate postnatal period and early childhood.It is imperative that health care and nutrition interventions can be seen as part of a continuum over time so that they may mutually reinforce each other. Planned interventions are focused towards improving awareness and access to:§ Maternal care services (health and nutrition services including ANC, PNC and obstetric care)§ Neonatal care services (healthcare and IYCF) and§ Timely diagnosis and treatment of Acute Malnutrition§ Community participation as a cornerstone 
 Action Against Hunger has touched close to 0.13 million lives and has reached out to over 149,000 children &lt;5 years of age. They have treated 23,000 malnourished children through Outpatient Therapeutic Centers and referrals to Government Treatment Centers; conducted over 47555 community information and discussion sessions; trained over 5358 Government frontline workers.
