“We received a distress call saying that a blind girl is being held captive by a woman and is being forced to beg. Our volunteers were able to rescue that girl and bring her to the Blind Welfare Society home for girls. We cared for her and educated her. Today that girl is a senior government official”, says Asha Bhola, President, Blind Welfare Society (BWS) as she recalls how her organisation has been able to transform lives.BWS has been a ray of hope for 40 such blind girls, many of whom have been abandoned by their families owing to their visual impairment. Sadly, the care, shelter and education for blind girls come at a cost, and BWS is unable to keep its work going. According to the nonprofit office bearer, “Many parents neglect their blind daughters and at times even sell them off for begging, etc. Even if the girl is from a well-to-do family, they feel providing education and care to a blind girl is a waste of money”. “What is the fault of an innocent child?”, she asks.Education, the only hope “These girls have no future without education. If they don’t receive education, they will remain uncared for. They will continue to be ignored by not just their families but even by society at large. Whatever I am today is only because of the education I received. But sadly, every blind girl is not as fortunate. “The major problem in society today is the stigma against mentally ill or mentally disabled people. Families feed and care for men who are mentally ill and keep them at home. But no one wants to help women with mental illnesses,” says N Vanitha Rengaraj, chairperson of Sharanalayam.Sharanalaym’s ‘Jothi’ is a sanctuary for over 100 women facing mental challenges. Many women were rehabilitated by the NGO, thanks to its facilities.Sharanalayam needs urgent support to take care of over 100 women. Action For Autism (AFA) is a non-profit organization that pioneered the autism movement in South Asia. In the 1980s autism was virtually unheard of in India, a diagnosis of autism was rare, and there was little information available. The majority of children with autism received a diagnosis of mental retardation, mental illness, minimal brain dysfunction, conduct disorder, or other such labels. Neither parents nor the schools understood that these children were in fact autistic, and that children with autism respond best to specific intervention techniques. In 1991 AFA began as a parent support group, with a focus on raising awareness about autism in India, and moved to provide counselling services, specialised education, and training for parents and professionals. March 1994 saw the start of ‘Open Door,’ the first specialised school for children with autism in South Asia. With overwhelming response to these initiatives the decision was taken to formally register Action For Autism in 1994.Despite autism being often viewed as a terrible and tragic condition, AFA’s philosophy as been one of acceptance and inclusion. AFA views autism as a different way of being, often difficult and challenging, but nonetheless as valid as the non-autistic.The mission of AFA is to facilitate a barrier free environment that enables the empowerment of persons with autism and their families; and to act as a catalyst for change that enables persons with autism to live as fully participating members of the community.The key areas of AFA’s work are Education, Awareness, Research, Training, Advocacy.

Every child is unique and different. They have different abilities hence, learn in different ways and at different paces. All learners have a right to education regardless of their individual characteristics or difficulties. Children who cannot access the right classes are often unable to receive adequate education due to a mismatch between their unique needs and the regular education system. A majority of children with special needs are deprived of education, in spite of the practice of inclusive education in schools.Education for all,continues to be an unresolved issue in India. While this is mandated by the law and considered as a basic human right, millions of children with disabilities continue to receive little or no education. To address this issue, educational programs offered at AFA stem from the broad definition of education. The goal of our program is to help the child with autism learn to the best of his/her abilities, building on the strengths and working on the difficulties. The focus of the teaching is multi-dimensional and encompasses all important skill areas.  
 At AFA individualised intervention program provides education that is especially designed for the children with autism who require specific teaching approaches, care and methods.The program starts with an initial assessment of the child. Based on the child’s strengths, behaviours, learning patterns, and the teaching and learning methods best suited to him/her, an individualized educational plan is made keeping in mind the child’s current  needs as well as the parents’ immediate concerns.This specially designed program allow the students to enjoy education and gain confidence due to individualised teaching. The individualised program focuses on the teaching strategies that overpower the disadvantages of their disability and help the children to get quality education. The intervention program follows various internationally recognised teaching methods like structure teaching, verbal behavioural analysis, applied behavioural analysis, social stories etc. The methodology assures that each child’s special needs are met and academic potentials are developed along with their social, emotional and physical potential, as they are interdependent aspects of a child’s development.
