I was filled with anguish and resolved to do something,” says Girish Kulkarni who has made it his life’s mission to rescue children from red light areas and give them a safe and secure childhood. In the last 3 decades Girish has saved over 1100 girls from a life of abuse in red-light areas, giving them a loving home, education and medical care. I had even seen my friend’s 15-year-old sister and 70-year-old grandmother being forced to do sex work for the price of a cup of tea”, recalls Girish. “I started by merely feeding and teaching children of sex workers initially with the intention of giving them some respite from the horrors of life of abuse in red-light areas. Gradually more and more mothers started coming to me and asked me to take their children away, even if it was just for a couple of hours,” he further adds.The work that Girish started in his youth gradually grew to become a movement, with many more joining his cause. That was the day I knew my mission in life was to get these children out of the hell-like conditions in red-light areas. For 11-year-old Ravi (name changed) a normal day would start before the sun rose and involved carrying heavy loads up a narrow staircase, in a ramshackle building filled with clouds of toxic smoke. There was a time when I fell from the first floor and had I not caught onto the railing, I am not sure what would have happened. The Trust has so far identified nearly 100 orphans and abandoned children, about more than 50 senior citizens who have been pushed to roads, and 25+ women who are deprived of social, emotional and educational support for their livelihood.

 The most disadvantaged group in India is of the millions of street children who live or work on the street. The reasons behind this are either these children are orphans or come from a poor economic background, and in several cases, have run away from home to escape child abuse. These children are malnourished, have never been to school or have dropped out, medical treatment in cases of injuries and in some severe cases; addiction towards drugs. Bangalore, city known for its parks and high-tech industry, and has more than 350 slums, out of which only a handful are identified by the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagar Palike (BBMP) of Bangalore. Being the capital city of Karnataka, thousands of people enter a new world for a better livelihood. These migrants, plus many other underprivileged, live with their children inillegal handmade shacks, tents, or on roads. For these children, education is like an unattainable luxury or something which they want to achieve but unfortunately cannot. They lose their childhoods and only have little hopes for a better future.To make their dreams come true, we took an initiative to open a place where all these kids can have a better chance at living. Shine Home was formed in the year 2013 by Adriane Charitable Trust community under the project 'NERALU'. Shine Home is serving the poverty-stricken and orphan children with their overall development, care and rehabilitation. Shine Home has different activities at regular intervals for children’s proper growth. Shine Home is not just a home, but a place for children where they can express their feelings and show their talent. A lot of facilities are being provided at Shine Home to make these children smarter.- All basic facilities such as food, clothes, a dormitory for the children, recreational andsports material, books, stationery, etc.- Children at Shine Home are enrolled at Hogwart S School, Bright School, and TheBaniyan School for primary and secondary education.- A helping hand is provided for educating children by different volunteers.
