And the worst affected are the children who grow up in red-light areas and are subjected to constant abuse and violence. “The sight of a 12-year-old girl being gang-raped by a group of men near a house l haunts me to this date. I was filled with anguish and resolved to do something,” says Girish Kulkarni who has made it his life’s mission to rescue children from red light areas and give them a safe and secure childhood. In the last 3 decades Girish has saved over 1100 girls from a life of abuse in red-light areas, giving them a loving home, education and medical care. Today there is a growing trend from large rural areas to big cities. Due to increased migration, urbanization, and industrialization, the problem of homeless, destitute, orphaned / street children is profound. Most parents live by the flyover, by the roadside. This leads to many problems such as drug addiction, child abduction, sexual abuse, and begging.The community with which Ajit Foundation works is the migrated community. These people are mainly from the Gosavi, Patharvat, Shikalkar communities who have migrated almost 05-10 years back. The main occupation of the community is to go to nearby villages by asking for flour, selling bindi's, collecting hair. When parents are away the older children look after the household chores and their younger siblings. As a result, children do not attend school. There is also a scarcity of schools in the nearby areas. These children fall victim to malnutrition, and older children become addicted. Children do child labour, so the proportion of out-of-school children is highest in the migrant slums. Parents get their daughters married early; therefore, the rate of child marriage is high. Boys and girls are sexually abused in migrant slums. The orphan and migrant children are involved in rag picking, pickpocketing, begging, and anti-social, criminal activities. These needy children are without food, education, and shelter. For years, the children of these communities have been deprived of education. Especially the girl child just could not enter into the mainstream of educational system of the state. Lack of education has been the main cause of the backwardness of these communities. 
 <ul><li>The promise of A Pencil is committed to raising the level of education and literacy in migrant slums and helping disadvantaged children realize their full potential. The project seeks to ensure quality education for children in the migrant slums, opening the door for them to participate in and benefit from India’s economic growth.</li><li>We promote free, equal access to quality education for all children – from early learning to secondary education. We work with children, their families, communities, wider society and governments so that all children are able to get an education.</li><li>Ajit Foundation bridges learning Gap through #ThePromiseOfPencil </li><li>The Project PoP is formation and strengthening of Education Development Committees is made with this objective. The organization will be able to provide the necessary training and guidance to teachers and the EDC members to carry on the works (in this case ensuring that children remain in school, children dropping out are again readmitted in the school) for the development of the children.</li><li>The teacher will regularly teach Migrant children and give them basic education with help of teaching aids and digital media.</li><li>We will be focusing to put the children in the Ashram shalas (which has a hostel facility) to keep the children in the schools. In the Aashram shalas, the children get their food and all educational assistance and allowances. This would motivate the children to be in the school. Our goal is to get children to school; Give education a chance and hand over the pencil of education to every migrant child.</li></ul> 
 <ol><li>Education is a dream for millions of children who struggle to survive daily. This project brings the school doorstep and will provide the first-generation learners with an excellent education, which will put them on the path toward breaking the pervasive cycles of poverty in their slum communities.</li><li>There will be opportunities for education.</li><li>Addiction will decrease.</li><li>Child labour can be avoided.</li><li>Around 35 lakh children are out of school in India and some of them are not learning basic skills as a result of poor quality education. Such children can be brought into the stream of education.</li></ol>
