“They insert a candle in the vagina, fingers are inserted (in the vagina) and tortured, and if children don’t relent even then, they put chilli powder so that children will say “yes” because of the burning of the skin… There are teeth marks on their bodies, and their vaginal parts are burnt. I was filled with anguish and resolved to do something,” says Girish Kulkarni who has made it his life’s mission to rescue children from red light areas and give them a safe and secure childhood. In the last 3 decades Girish has saved over 1100 girls from a life of abuse in red-light areas, giving them a loving home, education and medical care. We believe that everyone should have the opportunity to achieve their full potential in life. We provide basic necessities to the neediest children and women, including food, shelter, educationand medical assistance. Operation Shanti's first efforts in India were organized around helping families who were living on the streets of Mysore. On a daily basis, Operation Shanti volunteers provided meals and medical assistance to those living on the street. This became Project Street over time. Over the next two years, Operation Shanti began to provide housing and financial support for families, and educational opportunities for children so that they could go to school rather than working or begging in the streets. In 2006 and 2007, Operation Shanti placed several of the street children in a locally respected boarding school, getting them off the street.In 2008, Operation Shanti opened the Karunya Mane shelter on the outskirts of Mysore to provide the street children with a permanent shelter. At their choice, many of the children who had previously been placed in local boarding schools came to live at Karunya Mane. The children live at Karunya Mane seven days a week and attend schools near the shelter. Other children have been placed at locally respected boarding schools. This is our Project Home.In September of 2009, Operation Shanti began distributing care packages to destitute families affected by medical hardship.

The concern is that children who come from destitute backgrounds and lived on the streets and in slums in their early years have educational needs that are far greater than that of children from middle and upper class backgrounds. The biggest point for concern for us is that these kids lack concentration and focus, but are interested in getting an education. They need extra tutoring and guidance on a daily basis to keep them on track with their homework and lessons. 
 To meet this need, we employ 18 after-school tutors for the 52 children - 48 of whom live with us at our children's home, and 4 other poor but promising children who get educational support from us. This effort keeps the student:teacher ratio low and gives the children the attention they need to improve their concentration and focus, and to stay up-to-date with their lessons. 
 All of our children attend school, all of them like school and learning. More importantly, some of our kids are ranked in the top 5 of their classes and get excellent grades. Other results:- Two of our girls are in a very good private college - one finishing her BComm and she'll go on to get her MComm or MBA, and the other in her first year BSc.- Thirteen of our kids attend a very good CBSE school and do quite well there. - One of our girls has been ranked #1 in her class for years.- So far, all of our kids who have taken the SSLC (10th standard) exam have passed.Our teachers provide our kids with stability and guidance and more focused attention that the housemothers can give to such a large number of children.

The situation in Mysore is very difficult, with a lockdown in place and most destitute unable to continue begging for their food. Many suffer from mental health problems and do not understand what is going on, and do not wear masks. 
 The money we raise will be distributed in the form of rations (rice, dal, masks, parcels of hot cooked food) by the trusted people we have helped in our programs who are now stepping up to help us help others 🙏 ❤️ who now face the destitution they once lived through on the roadside. 
 We aim to give out hot cooked meals, masks, and other rations (rice, dal) to the destitute in Mysore who are suffering through this pandemic.
