It was just me and my young son. After my son got married, he left me to stay with his in-laws, and I was alone. I am old, have pain in my legs, knees, shoulders and my entire body so I cannot work as I once did. Akshaya Trust - Introduction“Grow old gracefully” goes an old saying. But growing old is quite painful for many in the modern society. In many lower middle class and poor families, taking care of old people is becoming a major issue day by day. As a result, many senior citizens, who spent their entire life to bring up their children to give them better status in life, are seen as a burden to the family and are forced to search for new home.Akshaya Trust, has been doing a yeomen service to those destitute senior citizens by taking them into its fold, giving them shelter, healthy food, medical care and more importantly love and affection. Started by Mr. Gopalan, an industrialist, in the year 2001, Akshaya today houses 250+ senior citizens and provides them with all facility at free of cost. There is a full-fledged medical team of doctors and nurses visit the home regularly to keep the inmates healthy. Newspapers, magazines and TV are provided to engage and entertain the inmates. In case of any eventuality the home performs all the rituals if the inmate’s relatives don’t turn up.Motivated by the selfless service, many individuals and groups visit Akshaya regularly, support the Trust with donations and also spend time with the inmates entertaining them with music, games, bhajans and general conversations. Many people offer donations during their special days such as birthday, wedding day and memorial days of their relatives. Many families even come and celebrate their special days with the inmates.HIGHLIGHTS OF FACILITIES PROVIDED AT AKSHAYA OLD AGE HOMES·       Generator Installed: Power cut is a constant problem in the rural area where Akshaya is located. This results in discomfort to the inmates, especially during summers. Also, the water pumping and even cooking gets affected because of erratic power supply. To overcome this, with the donation from a well-wisher, Generator set has been installed, which can take care of the entire needs of Akshaya home.·       Cupboards provided: For storing personal things, inmates were using their own bags and suitcases, which becomes cumbersome for them and also becomes messy. To make it convenient for the inmates to store their personal belongings, individual cupboards are provided to every inmate.·       Audio system installed: The main entertainment for the senior citizens is listening to music, bhajans and discourses. Many volunteer groups visit Akshaya home regularly to conduct music performance, bhajan sessions and talk shows. To enhance these events and also to play music regularly, a professional audio system with amplifier and mics was installed and is being used very effectively.·       Mosquito Protection: Mosquito menace is a major problem in the area where Akshaya is located. Many times, this leads to spreading of diseases and also discomfort to inmates during sleeping. Looking at the problem, a set of well-wishers came forward to provide mosquito nets to the windows of the entire building. After this, the problem has greatly reduced.·       Solar water heater installed: As the inmates are aged persons, there is a constant need for hot water for bathing and drinking in addition to cooking. A considerable amount of power is consumed to make the hot water every month. To reduce the monthly power cost and also to become more eco-friendly, large solar water heaters are installed with the support of few donors. Now there is an uninterrupted supply of hot water throughout the day.·       Solar Power plant- All the three units are installed with solar power plant to save operating cost. These units not only supply to our units but also export the excess power to grid when it is not used.·       Festivals and Tours – All festivals are celebrated in grand way so that inmates don’t miss any occasion. The healthy inmates are taken out once in three months to temples, beach and important places in Chennai so that they enjoy their last part of life.·       Entertainment: Many volunteers individually as well as in groups, visit our homes at regular intervals and present music shows, bhajans, game shows, magic shows and so on to keep the residents engaged and entertained.Systems and Procedures·         All our payments are received and made through a special software custom made for us. The software also stores donors' database, residents' data. Reminders for donation are also automated through this software.·       95% payments are received and made through digital mode.·       We have a volunteer internal auditor who checks all our financial transactions on a regular basis.·       We have an internal audit to check the various operations (cleanliness, record maintenance, food quality, residence grievances, etc) on a regular basis.·       Feedback from the donors is obtained on a daily basis and our average score so far is above 4.5 out of 5. ·       We are fully compliant with Government regulations, with all the valid licenses (fire, sanitary, building stability, 80 g, 12 AA etc) to operate at every unit.·      Employee welfare is one of our important focus areas. For all our employees we have ESI, PF, bonus, gratuity, family medical insurance coverage, accident insurance policy, and many such welfare schemes.·       We have an objective appraisal system for evaluation of employee performance on a regular basis.·       We have systems and procedures for admission, procurement, demise of a resident, etc. Well documented SOP is available for various tasks.Present Units:At present Akshaya homes are running at four locations, Mudichur, Pallikaranai Valasaravkkam, Pallavakkam and Vellappanchavadi . All the five put together can house 300 + residents, which is the full capacity

Below is the field visit summary led by GIVE's Sandesh Ramachandran on 20/01/25 to Akshaya Trust's shelter home for the abandoned elderly. The elderly beneficiaries of the shelter home come from diverse backgrounds, but all share the same fate of being abandoned or forgotten. Our goal is to preserve their dignity and help them live out the rest of their days in peace. Upon interacting with the beneficiaries, we learned how they were satisfied with the facilities. They were still in high spirits from their recent celebration of the Pongal festival, sponsored by Akshaya Trust, who manage several such celebrations for the residents of their shelter home. Our meeting with the shelter homes Management team was equally impressive. We were pleased to witness the comprehensive care for Akshaya Trust's beneficiaries, with an excellent caretaker-to-beneficiary ratio and a well-managed and informative system of stat tracking and outreach. When the elderly are no longer able to do anything for their families, the families desert them. Further, there also suffer from a lot of health issues for which their family is incapable of providing. 
 We provide free shelter, food, clothing and medical facility to all residents free of cost. Each resident is provided with all the facilities they need to be able to spend the last years of their life peacefully. We arrange for regular medical examinations and entertainment programs for them to live happily. 
 They don't have to worry about their food and shelter. They are living the last days of their lives happily. We are trying to set an example for how the elderly should be looked after.

Akshaya Trust is the old age home which was started on 2001 by Mr.G.Gopalan with a single inmate who was left as destitute by family members, now we are having three units with 120 senior citizens with free accommodation, food, medical care etc.Planning to have one more unit in Palavakkam to accommodate 60 more elderly people to give them physical and moral support. 
 Kindly looking for the support by the donors to expand our services to accommodate more destitute elders as the demand for admission has become very high due to this pandemic situation.Have budgeted the proposal for the cost of Rs.45 lacs, now the mandatory requirements has been addressed here to the cost of Rs.18.63 lacs 
 In the new home we are planning to have 60 more elderly destitutes to give them peace of mind from the family pressure due to their age and inability.Providing free accomodation, food, medicines and other medical care.
