65-year-old Shakuntala completely depends on our partner NGO, Share and Care, for her food requirements, as she has no one else to take care of her. “When my only child was young, my husband Nadesan died. It was just me and my young son. After my son got married, he left me to stay with his in-laws, and I was alone. I am old, have pain in my legs, knees, shoulders and my entire body so I cannot work as I once did. To achieve this mission, Share and Care runs a program in Chennai and also a village in Tiruvallur, where the 400 elderly live. The beneficiaries of Akshaya Trust's shelter home for the abandoned elderly have faced unspeakable trauma, and yet they remain unbowed. Below is the field visit summary led by GIVE's Sandesh Ramachandran on 20/01/25 to Akshaya Trust's shelter home for the abandoned elderly. The elderly beneficiaries of the shelter home come from diverse backgrounds, but all share the same fate of being abandoned or forgotten. Our goal is to preserve their dignity and help them live out the rest of their days in peace. Upon interacting with the beneficiaries, we learned how they were satisfied with the facilities. They were still in high spirits from their recent celebration of the Pongal festival, sponsored by Akshaya Trust, who manage several such celebrations for the residents of their shelter home. Our meeting with the shelter homes Management team was equally impressive. We were pleased to witness the comprehensive care for Akshaya Trust's beneficiaries, with an excellent caretaker-to-beneficiary ratio and a well-managed and informative system of stat tracking and outreach. When the elderly are no longer able to do anything for their families, the families desert them. Further, there also suffer from a lot of health issues for which their family is incapable of providing. 
 We provide free shelter, food, clothing and medical facility to all residents free of cost. Each resident is provided with all the facilities they need to be able to spend the last years of their life peacefully. We arrange for regular medical examinations and entertainment programs for them to live happily. 
 They don't have to worry about their food and shelter. They are living the last days of their lives happily. We are trying to set an example for how the elderly should be looked after.

Old age home

Akshaya Trust is the old age home which was started on 2001 by Mr.G.Gopalan with a single inmate who was left as destitute by family members, now we are having three units with 120 senior citizens with free accommodation, food, medical care etc.Planning to have one more unit in Palavakkam to accommodate 60 more elderly people to give them physical and moral support. 
 Kindly looking for the support by the donors to expand our services to accommodate more destitute elders as the demand for admission has become very high due to this pandemic situation.Have budgeted the proposal for the cost of Rs.45 lacs, now the mandatory requirements has been addressed here to the cost of Rs.18.63 lacs 
 In the new home we are planning to have 60 more elderly destitutes to give them peace of mind from the family pressure due to their age and inability.Providing free accomodation, food, medicines and other medical care.
